YOU AND THE RAF

WORKING for the RAF Community

by Rebecca Wakefield, Regional Community Development Advisor (North)

Community Development Officers are key members of Community Support teams working at RAF Stations. Professionally qualified and skilled, many CDOs have a fondness for tea, cake and a good chat but all have a passion for supporting and promoting a sense of belonging to our community and the RAF family.

he professional background from which CDOs are drawn is wide. Some have had careers working within Local

Authorities, others in Social Services or large charitable organisations, some have been youth workers, development workers or service managers and it is this diversity of skills, knowledge and experience that CDOs bring to the RAF.

CDOs work with children, young people, parents, serving personnel and partners living in our RAF communities, identify the issues,

needs and wants and, either as a community or group, set about developing responses and finding solutions to those needs.

As part of station Community Support Teams, CDOs manage the resources available, access support from Local authorities and encourage and support individuals and groups to act together to develop knowledge, skills, confidence and capacity. Community Development is not so much about ‘doing it’ for the community as being enablers to help addressing the barriers and supporting individuals and communities in coming

together and delivering the solutions to their own needs and to achieve goals.

Across the country at this time, Community Development Officers are leading on conducting Community Needs Analysis, gathering people together to talk about the issues and concerns and what can be done to improve their community. Discussions are taking place on how community support services, projects and initiatives are meeting needs and, exploring those services and projects that work well and finding areas where they could be improved.
