STARVER REDUCES THE DEMAND FOR CHLORINE

Some specialist products thrive on the edge of the low chlorine debate by offering the ability to use lower levels of chlorine. Such a product is Lo-Chlor’s Starver, specially formulated for the removal of extreme levels of phosphates. It is phosphates which are the main nutrient for algae, and by taking these out of the water then it’s possible to ‘starve’ the algal food chain. By breaking the food chain then we reduce the formation of algae, as there is no food source in the water. This is technically known as reducing the ‘demand’ (demand for chlorine) in the water, and once the demand is reduced then chlorine consumption will reduce anywhere up to 30%. It doesn’t mean that pool operators can reduce the amount of chlorine that they can put in, as these levels are set by BISHTA, but it does mean that chlorine levels are not depleted as quickly. The Lo-Chlor line up of Starver products includes: • Lo-Chlor Starver with built-in clarifier – the premier phosphate remover around the globe.

• Lo-Chlor Bulk Starver – Bulk Starver binds with phosphates in water and sends them to the bottom of the pool. Once vacuumed to waste phosphate levels can be reduced by up to 3ppm.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk “The possible health risks of chlorine

continue to be underplayed in public by many in the industry although what is featured on their members’ own retail websites can sometimes contradict the ‘official’ view”

“Progress is definitely being made as more major companies turn away from chlorine to PoolSan. PoolSan pools do not require UV, ozone, chlorine, bromine or salt.

“Whilst activity in the commercial and domestic sector is significant, what is disappointing is the lack of support amongst some, and I have to say it is only some, industry bodies and experts. PoolSan pools have been operational for years now and, contrary to what some ‘experts’ said when we converted our first health club pool and spa in 2007, they run smoothly and easily with no bacteriological failures or health issues. Environmental health officers in London who oversaw those first few pools and spas continue to be some of our most enthusiastic supporters.” Some of the biggest and most respected companies now use PoolSan and it is being approved by more and more governmental and health bodies around the world. PoolSan is unlike traditional copper and/or silver only products to which some mistakenly equate it – it is effective, easy to control and the dosing process reacts rapidly to the bather load and bacterial requirement. There are no electrodes, generators, copper sulphate solutions, magnets or the like – just a safe to handle and easy to dose liquid. Yet go to many of the pool advisory

bodies’ websites and you won’t see any current advice and that is disappointing. Some associations – generally those whose members have used and operated PoolSan pools – are very supportive and we are very happy to work with them. A PoolSan three-day pool operator’s course is being written with a view to it being certificated by a widely recognised industry training provider. So many of our clients need this for their staff but they find a standard pool operator’s certificate focuses too much on chlorine which they no longer have on site. The possible health risks of chlorine continue to be underplayed in public by many in the industry although what is featured on their members’ own retail websites can sometimes contradict the ‘official’ view.

Leading hotels and health clubs have provided their support for a chlorine-free option. Topnotch Health Clubs group has been using PoolSan instead of sodium hypochlorite since January 2010 and within six months of changing to PoolSan usage of the chlorine-free pool at their flagship central London club had increased by 20%. Most impressive was the direct revenue generated by the change to PoolSan with an increase of £1,500 in monthly pool rental revenues after the change to a chlorine-free pool.

Leading hotels and health clubs have provided their support for a chlorine free option including the Connaught Hotel, London who use PoolSan
