LUXEMA 8000 – THE ULTIMATE LUXURY?

Slovenian hot tub manufacturers have launched what might be called the ultimate hot tub. It’s a triple decker Luxema 8000 swim spa/hot tub which contains 130 jets, an LCD TV, and individual speakers to entertain triple the amount of people a traditional tub can handle. The Luxema 8000 allows for all the relaxation in one giant pool. For the hot tub section, a six-person seater is located at the tail end with powerful jet massagers and an LCD television with a DVD player and surround sound speakers. On the other wall of the tub across from the television screen, a wooden bar table allows for friends to

join the party even without their bathing suits by hanging out on the stools and enjoying a cocktail or two. The huge structure, which weighs 1,500kg (without the 10,000 litres of water needed to fill it), costs around £26,000.

The long design allows for easy movement around the pool and built-in steps for when you’re ready to jump out. Underwater lighting is also available.

HOT TUB CONSIGNMENTS BANNED FROM UK ENTRY

Six consignments of hot tubs from China were refused entry on to the UK market in early April following an investigation by HM Customs and Excise. It’s the latest in a number of crackdowns on illegal products which fail import conditions. There have been at least two other incidents in the past eight months. Some of the consignments, being shipped into the UK from three Chinese based companies, were thought to be pirated brands of leading overseas manufacturing companies, mainly from the United States. The tubs were impounded after inadequate paperwork and some of the tubs were said to be ‘not in any condition for safe retail sale’. It is not clear what will happen to the banned tubs or whether any prosecution will follow.

The crackdown reflects the growing trade in pirated copies of top brands where a design is copied and then offered at less than half the recommended price, almost exclusively on the internet.

On investigation although the designs of the hot tubs look genuine, service engineers have said that the electrics and plumbing are often both ‘basic and dangerous’ and fail all safety checks .

The practice of these rogue models has been known about for some time with dealers in Britain and some manufacturers being approached to stock the products. The concern is the practice is still growing.

The US top trade show in Las Vegas saw the issue raised by organisers with some hot tub exhibitors reporting evidence of rogue companies working at the show and looking to copy exterior design and gather detailed and technical information from leading brands.

Many service engineers in the UK believe that cheap bottom end spas and hot tubs sold in the UK represent a tragedy waiting to happen. While the top end of the hot tub market is focused on innovation, new technology and improved safety issues, the suspect end of the market represents danger to consumers. Many authorised engineers are called in to help repair cheap imports where the electrics and plumbing are naïve and often dangerous.
