I

t is always important for SPATA and BISHTA to provide value for money (VFM) in its membership packages and this is constantly reviewed to pick up feedback from members and non members about what they want their Trade

Association(s) to offer. Members want to support the industry but also want to know their money is being used wisely and that provides them with the best return for their investment. The obvious benefits include the use of the SPATA

and / or BISHTA logo to demonstrate the commitment to working to industry standards and abiding by the Code of Ethics. Being listed on the website is also a useful way of promoting your company to a wider audience. The e- newsletters sent out on a weekly basis also provide members with up to date information on topics, such as the water restrictions reported elsewhere in this issue of Swimming Pool News. Members that read e-news regularly will be up to date with the important matters in the industry and also be the first to know when a marketing opportunity comes along. In previous issues of Swimming Pool News (such as April 2011 p32) a

number of member benefits have been featured, including a vehicle purchasing scheme offering bulk discounts to members, even if they only want to buy one vehicle. Other membership offers included saving money on foreign exchange transactions, as these can help to reduce the actual cost of SPATA / BISHTA membership. Members were also advised of the excellent service provided through the Stakeholder account (a service that can safeguard monies owed to members by their customers). The Stakeholder account has even helped members purchasing goods and services who deposit the money with SPATA and then they do not risk having to pay out the money to the supplier before receiving their goods.

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION SPATA always encourages its members to avoid taking legal action against customers (or other trade companies) in the first instance, as SPATA may be able to offer its services to reach a satisfactory resolution. By working with SPATA, you may be able to keep legal costs down for both parties. Where members may be facing legal action from clients (or other trade companies) it may be very beneficial to request that the client contacts SPATA to try and reach a suitable compromise, before legal proceedings commence.

AWARDS ENTRY The SPATA and BISHTA Awards are organised annually to celebrate the achievements of members by their peers. They provide an excellent opportunity to promote both individual companies and the industry itself, as trade and consumer publications are very interested in showing the latest award winning pools and spas. SPATA and BISHTA are always very grateful to

the companies that enter the Awards, but especially to those companies that sponsor them. The Awards are open to SPATA and BISHTA members only. Entries will be judged on technical merit and their aesthetic appeal. SPATA judges will aim to award a Gold, Silver and Bronze award in each category, subject to their being sufficient entries, of a suitable quality while BISHTA awards Winners and Runners Up classifications.

TECHNICAL ADVICE Members are able to benefit from Technical Advice offered through Peter Lang, SPATA’s Technical Advisor and other representatives of the SPATA Technical Committee, or by Howard Gosling, BISHTA’s Technical Advisor and other representatives of BISHTA’s Technical Committee. The advice sought is often about

pool construction queries, but may be about water treatment, or queries on the SPATA and BISHTA Standards. The Technical

Committee has a wealth of knowledge

to share and it can often be the case that other members have some specialist knowledge and this is always welcome if it can be shared with other members.

If members want to find out more about the range of member factsheets available then please visit the members’ area of the SPATA or BISHTA website, or contact the office.
