170 MILE CYCLE CHALLENGE FOR GOLDEN COAST’S DOMINIC ADAMS
his own personal challenge so he could also raise money for Devon Air Ambulance.
The total distance Dominic will cover will be around 170 miles and he expects it will take around 15 hours to complete both legs of the journey. Commenting on his forthcoming cycle challenge, Dominic said: “By challenging myself hopefully I will inspire people to sponsor me for one of the two great charities I’m riding for.”
Dominic Adams, Director of Devon based Golden Coast, has decided to set a personal cycling challenge of 170 miles of non-stop cycling to raise money for North Devon Hospice and Devon Air Ambulance Trust. In the early hours of Sunday 3 June 2012, Dominic will take to the road on his bicycle and start his journey from Barnstable to Looe in Cornwall. Expecting to arrive at around 9am, Dominic will then get back in the saddle for the return cycle with around 500 other cyclists including his brother, Jamie, all raising money for North Devon Hospice.
Having previously taken part in the Coast to Coast Challenge, which is an annual charity ride from Looe to Barnstable in aid of North Devon hospice, Dominic decided to add in
As well as raising money for the Coast to Coast Challenge’s nominated charity, Dominic is using the first leg of his journey to encourage people to also donate money to the Devon Air Ambulance, a charity that is particularly close to his heart. A couple of years ago Dominic was airlifted off Crow Point by the Devon Air Ambulance after a water skiing accident. Dominic suffered a whiplash injury, causing temporary paralysis and was completely reliant on the air ambulance crews to transfer him to hospital as ambulances couldn’t reach the beach.
Dominic added: “The Devon Air Ambulance crews were amazing and I really wanted to do something to raise money as a thank you for what they did for me.”
Dominic is raising money via his Just Giving page. Please visit

GOOD TIMES FOR PAUL AT BRIGHTON MARATHON
Since deciding to lose weight, get fit and stay fit, Fairlock’s Paul Webb has completed a number of strenuous tasks the most recent being the Brighton Marathon in April. Paul completed the marathon in a pretty impressive 4 hours 36 minutes and still managed a night out with the family in Brighton’s Lanes saying: “It genuinely does get easier the more you run and as well as keeping me fit it definitely concentrates the mind. Nothing wrong with a good meal and a beer afterwards as a reward of course.”
A REAL FUN RUN FOR AQUAFLEX’S JOHN CROSSMAN
Every year more than 40,000 runners crowd the streets of Paris in the annual Marathon de Paris. This year’s runners included Aquaflex’s John Crossman super fit daughter Natalie and her partner Sam Baxter; an ‘Iron Man’ finalist sponsored by Virgin Active. The highlight of the
run came when to the rapture of the 250,000 enthusiastic onlookers, John joined Natalie and Sam to run with them for at least 26 metres! “I wanted to support my daughter,” said John, “it was the least I could do!” John’s time came in at 1 minute 20 seconds!
MICHAEL SHEEN SPEAKS UP TO SUPPORT LIDO
Actor Michael Sheen has spoken out about the controversy surrounding the replacement leisure complex that is planned for a famous outdoor lido. The Afan Lido, Port Talbot is one of the most famous pools in Wales. He said: “I hope the people of Port Talbot get the swimming pool they deserve, and that the plans which are afoot are adequate to answer the needs and demands of the town.”
Local sports clubs have expressed concern that the council’s plans for the new lido, to replace the complex that was demolished this year after being gutted by fire in 2009, will not be fit for purpose.
Plans currently include a six-lane pool.
“The Afan Lido was such a permanent fixture in all our lives for so many years,” added Sheen. “The new swimming pool will be a central part of the town’s life for generations to come.
“I hope those in a position to affect the size and scope of this project will take this into consideration, and give the town something we can be proud of.” Representatives of Aberavon Surf Lifesaving Club, Aberavon Swimming Club and Afan Lido FC have said the facility will be substandard. They want an eight-lane pool and learner facilities.
