coatings

International Paint believes a freshly coated hull will perform better at the end of its docking cycle

the importance of providing owners with as much accurate information on the performance of its products as it can. Therefore, because of the questions associated with the methods of fuel saving prediction calculations, it has come together with BMT Argoss and will utilise the new BMT Smartservices system to verify, through independent monitoring and software analysis, the contribution to vessel performance from fuel savings and reduced emissions made by its Intersmooth SPC antifouling and Intersleek foul release coatings. The new relationship with BMT will provide

real-time data, recorded automatically from ships’ sensors to monitor engine torque, the speed log and navigational signals (heading and speed over ground). This information will be integrated with BMT’s 24/7 in-house validated MetOcean data which includes factors such as wind speed and direction, currents (speed and direction), and wave height and direction being experienced by the ship. The data is gathered automatically from high resolution, highly accurate satellites.

One of the main benefits of this performance monitoring would be the ability to determine the energy efficiency of the vessel within the EEDI encompassed in the SEEMP guidelines. International Paint and BMT say they want to supply shipowners

and operators

with

information in a completely open and transparent way to provide clarity to those using the information. They want owners to get fuel savings benefits, but want to make sure that there is complete understanding of the actual savings possible, rather than just accepting the largest figure. With cruise ships, the fuel savings from

clean smooth hulls and the relationship with energy efficiency is not as clear cut as it is with other vessel types. This is due to up to half of the bunker fuel being used for hotel power, with the remainder used to power the ship through the water.

Whatever the actual fuel savings from a

specific fouling control product, there is no doubt that a good hull coating will contribute to the energy efficiency of the vessel. PST
