fast ferry news Austal acquires former FBMA yard


Australia-based shipbuilder, Austal, has bought the former FBMA shipyard in Cebu, the Philippines, as part of its strategy to regionalise its manufacturing base for commercial vessels. The US$7 million acquisition enables Austal to establish shipbuilding operations at the West Cebu Industrial Park at Balamban, and it will invest a further US$5 million to enhance the yard’s existing facilities. Austal plans to start vessel


construction in first quarter 2012, and expects to employ about 30 workers during the start-up phase. The facility will primarily construct small- and medium- sized aluminium passenger ferries,


A Barbados-based consortium has won a contract to operate a fast ferry service between Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Barbados. Chinese partnership to produce sightseeing ferry


Liuzhou Yinliu Hotel Management has contracted Afai Southern Shipyard in Guangzhou, China, to build a 35m luxury city sightseeing ferry. The aluminium vessel will have a beam of 8.6m, capacity for 100 passengers and will be deployed on the Liujiang River in 2013. Furthermore, in February


the yard delivered a 34m ferry to Shenzhen Xunlong Shipping. Xunlong 5 is the first of a pair of aluminium catamarans for this operator and will sail mainly around the Pearl River mouth between Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay. Xunlong 5 can accommodate 188 passengers and is powered by twin engines and waterjets.
