were moved further outwards. The Sperry Marine Vision Master bridge equipment was also updated to integrate the radar and electronic chart system into one display.

The balcony installation was part of a full

revitalisation of every stateroom, which included fitting flat panel TVs and new Santarossa toilets. Twenty-two new staterooms were created, nine for crew and 13 for passengers, including one family suite, taking the total to 915. Dining options were doubled thanks to the addition of Izumi – an Asian restaurant, Chops Grille steakhouse, the Park Café deli and an exclusive Chef’s dining table. The Park Café and a new Boardwalk Dog House hot dog counter were inspired by similar areas on the Oasis class. The Viking Crown lounge also required a new

galley, which meant an extra air handling unit was installed along with a new exhaust pipe and all the related ducting, cabling and coil protection. “We did a thorough review of the condition of the ship prior to drydock; how it can handle the additional HVAC loads from the new venues,” said Mr Keso. “We’ve carried out upgrades to make sure the ship is in really good shape in terms of HVAC.” Splendour’s main atrium, the Centrum, also

received a major facelift with the introduction of Centrum Wow, an acrobatic ‘flying’ show where performers are suspended from above. The first entertainment of its kind at sea required rigging to be installed on the ceiling of the 18m-high space. “We had to install tracks in the ceiling for all the gantry cranes,” said Mr Keso. “There was quite a lot of steel work needed to take all the loads coming from the bungee cords and the rest of the equipment for the show.” The Centrum’s former Champagne Bar was converted into the R Bar, a 1960s-style cocktail bar. The glass lifts facing into the atrium now feature large LED panels to create moving visuals spanning its five-deck height. Other

new passenger amenities include

a Diamond Lounge, a Concierge Lounge and a Royal Babies and Tots Nursery. The pool deck was completely refurbished, with a big screen TV added, following its success on the Freedom class. Both the gym and the shopping outlet area were revitalised as well. Crew areas were also refitted. “We care about

our crew so we have given them new facilities such as a new crew mess and staff mess, bar, disco and upgraded cabins with flat screen TVs,” said Mr Bailom. The whole project involved around 550 staff, including engineers, naval architects and interior designers, plus an estimated 1,000 contractors, in total generating 500,000 man hours of work during the drydock period. Ms Murrell commented, “The big challenge was to incorporate all of these new features into an old ship. You have to be very careful what you feed onto the electrical side, the HVAC load and fire protection and detection systems. You need to be able to source either the originally specified equipment or find a newer type which is compatible.”

Following completion of the upgrade, Splendour

of the Seas sailed a transatlantic route from Lisbon, Portugal, to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where the ship will homeport for the Brazilian summer season. PST
