Second P&O cross-Channel giant delivered
UK operator, P&O Ferries, has taken delivery of the 47,592gt Spirit of France, following its sistership, Spirit of Britain’s delivery last year. STX Finland’s Rauma yard built both 213m vessels. The pair are the largest ferries operating on the Dover to Calais route. Spirit of France is 31m wide with 12 decks and
can accommodate 2,000 passengers. With 3,746 lane metres it can accommodate up to 180 freight trucks and 195 passenger cars. A unique drag- reducing hullform enhances fuel economy and means that the vessel can ship twice the payload of previous generation Channel ferries for the same running costs.
Multipurpose ferry delivered in France Conseil général du Finistère, a council within the French department of Bretagne, has taken delivery of a 45m ferry from Chantiers Piriou of Concarneau. Fromveur II will transport passengers and goods to islands off Brest.
The ferry can accommodate 365 passengers, 38m³ of liquid load and 25 tonnes of dry cargo. Two 1,650kW main engines enable the vessel to reach speeds of 15 knots. The ship is also accessible for people with reduced mobility: the lift and the wide passageways make it easy to move from one deck to the other.

Washington State orders more ferries as one is delivered
Vigor Industrial (formerly Todd Pacific Shipyards) delivered the 84m Kennewick, the third and final 64-car Kwa-di-Tabil class ferry to US operator Washington State Ferries at the end of 2011, three months ahead of schedule. Washington State then
ordered a 144-car ferry from the Seattle-based yard. The 110.4m vessel will be able to accommodate 1,500 passengers on the San Juan Islands route, replacing the 60 year old
Evergreen State. The shipbuilder is due to start steel cutting in early 2012; construction will take up to 27 months.
The state’s department of transportation also contracted Foss Maritime to build a 20-car vessel to operate on Lake Roosevelt. Construction will start in autumn 2012, with delivery scheduled for May 2013. The aluminium ferry will replace the 63 year old Martha S.
following the JJ Sietas-built Uthlande’s delivery in 2010. The new vessel can accommodate 1,200 passengers and 75 cars and has been put into service between the North Frisian islands of Föhr and Amrum.
Chinese owner orders domestically Weihai Haida Ferry Co of China has ordered a 2,200-passenger/ 1,100-lane-metre ropax ferry from Huanghai shipyard. Shen Shen 2 will have a design speed of 18 knots and replace Xin Shen Shen on a route between Weihai and Dalian.
The ferry will feature a twin-
screw MAN 9L32/40 propulsion plant and Renk single-reduction gearboxes with a PTO shaft to drive the alternators, along with two MAN Alpha VBS1020 Mk 5 CP propellers. Additionally, the Alphatronic 2000 is the propulsion control system.
Second new WDR ferry in two years put into service German owner, Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (WDR) has taken delivery of the 75.9m Schleswig-Holstein from the Neptun Werft yard, Rostock. This is the second new double- ended ferry for the operator,
