manoeuvring technology news Steerprop adds to azimuth propulsor range

Steerprop is continuing to evolve its azimuth propulsor series, increasing both speed and power. Based in Rauma, Finland, the company now has the technology available to deliver up to 20MW per unit, which will make products highly attractive for applications such as cruise ships. The Steerprop dual-end

contra-rotating propeller (CRP) design offers high efficiency, particularly at speeds above 25 knots, combined with very low

levels of vibration, cavitation and noise. It is based on a simple, robust design with power from the vertical drive shaft being split to drive each propeller through a short intermediate shaft. Propeller speed is kept low, which offers long lifetimes for bearings and seals and reduces maintenance requirements and costs. Steerprop claims that the efficiencies of CRP products can provide fuel savings of up to 10 per cent.
