River operator orders ocean-going cruise ships

Newcomer Viking Ocean Cruises, an affiliate of Viking River Cruises (VRC), has ordered two 41,000gt cruise ships from STX France, with an option for a third. This move represents a major expansion for the river cruise operator into the international ocean cruise business. Construction of the first

vessel is expected to start at the St Nazaire shipyard in mid- September 2012 for delivery in spring 2014. The second ship is due for delivery in spring 2015. The contract will represent 4 million man-hours of work for the yard. Each of the vessels will have a length of 230m and a beam

in brief

• Avalon Waterways will take delivery of 32-passenger Avalon Angkor in September 2012, the first of its vessels launching outside Europe. It will sail between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap.

STX France will build two 41,000gt cruise ships for Viking Ocean Cruises

of 26.5m. Lower berth capacity will be 888 with a crew complement of 444. • VRC is refurbishing and renaming four of its Russian- based vessels. The first, Viking Rurik, (ex Viking Peterhof) will have full, private balconies added to staterooms on the upper and middle decks.

Seven newbuilds but no new designs in 2012 This year sees the delivery of seven cruise ship newbuildings, but each one is more or less part of an existing series rather any new designs. Disney Fantasy, the first to set sail, will be followed by Oceania Cruises’ 65,000gt Riviera. Sister to Marina, construction has been delayed due to strikes at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa. It is now due to be named on 16 May rather than 24 April as previously planned. The Italian builder is also

responsible for 114,500gt Costa Fascinosa, the seventh in series to be built at the Marghera yard. Costa Fascinosa was due to be named in Savona on 6 May, but the company

has cancelled all celebratory events as a sign of respect to the victims of sistership Costa Concordia (see page 14). The 140,000gt MSC Divina, which will be delivered from STX France, is third ship in the Fantasia class. AidaMar (71,000gt), the sixth in the Sphinx-series of ships for Aida Cruises, will be delivered from Meyer Werft, to be followed by 130,000gt Carnival Breeze from Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard, which built sister Carnival Magic. The last delivery of the year is due to be the final Celebrity Cruises Solstice-class ship, 126,000gt Celebrity Reflection, also from Meyer Werft. PST

• International Shipping Partners has bought 8,282gt Le Diamont from Compagnie du Ponant. The vessel is being chartered back to Ponant for the summer of 2012 and will then be chartered to Quark Expeditions for multiple winter seasons, sailing as Ocean Diamond. The vessel is available for charter for the summer season from 2013.

• Star Cruises spent US$25 million refurbishing the 76,800gt SuperStar Virgo in January. Work included renovating public spaces and redesigning accommodation.

• Hurtigruten’s Nordlys was repaired at Fiskerstrand shipyard following fire damage and will re-enter service on 20 March. Meanwhile Finnmarken is returning from Australia after two years and will sail the Norwegian coast from 16 February following a refit.

• The 42,000gt Corinthian II has been chartered out to Albatros Travel, Denmark, for summer 2013, with options for further summers.
