CYClE UKRAINE
Cycle the highlights of Western Ukraine including the Carpathian Mountains, the Dniester River Valley as well as places of cultural interest such as Lviv, Chernivtsy and Kamianets-Podilskyi. We follow the course of the Dniester from the Carpathians to Podolien. Where distances permit we will be cycling between the historical cities.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Lviv and drive to Sambir. Day 2 Carpathians We drive by bus towards the Carpathian mountains. Cycle through the colourful villages to arrive at the upper Dniester River Valley in Starji Sambir. Day 3 Dniester River Ride through a flat plain, where the Dniester River once flowed through large swamps. Cycle along old avenues lined by trees onto Drogobych. This sleepy and provincial city is small but impressive with numerous historical monuments that can be admired by bicycle. Day 4 Oak forest Cycle to the mineral springs before continuing through dense oak forests to the remote village of Dovgoluka. Day 5 Natural formations Cycle past the “Yar” or “gorge”, and the river canyon cutting deeply into the red sandstone. After following the course of the Dzhuryn River, we cycle past the ruins of Cherwonograd, a former Polish fortification. Day 6 To Chernivtsi Today we cycle along a chain of fishponds and the Prut river to reach Chernivtsi. Day 7 Dniester Valley Visit Chernivtsi by bus, then Khotyn castle at Dniester, finally cycle to Kamyanets. Day 8 Lviv We take the bus to Lviv, one of the most important cities of Western Ukraine as well as a former capital of Galicia. It is a town dotted with cultural monuments. After a short ride through the green areas on the outskirts there will be a guided tour through the historic centre of town. Day 9 Fly to London.
