Bardejov Prague, Saxony and the elbe


Explore this ancient landscape as we cycle through the basalt hills of the Czech Republic to the sandstone canyons of ‘Saxon Switzerland’. The Vltava and Elbe Rivers meander throughout this delightful region and link some of central Europe’s finest historic towns and cities. Along the way we visit the fortress town of Terezin and explore the beautiful Czech capital of Prague.


ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Prague. Day 2 ‘The Garden of Bohemia’ Cycle through beautiful rolling countryside known as the ‘Garden of Bohemia’ to the small town of Melnik. Days 3/4 Ruined Fortresses Cycle along the banks of the river Elbe to Litomerice. Visit the fortress town of Terezin. Days 5/6 ‘Saxon Switzerland’ Explore the region known as the ‘Saxon Swtizerland’, famous for its sandstone rock formations and craggy canyons. Follow the Elbe River to the dramatic fortress of Konigstein and continue to the small town of Pirna. Cycle through sandstone hills and riverside meadows to the city of Dresden, passing Pilinitz castle and Blue Wonder Bridge along the way. Cycle through beautiful vineyards to the town of Meissen. Route and Terrain: On this tour we cycle 229 km over five days (an average of 46 km per day). The terrain is mostly flat or downhill with several short uphill sections, generally when ascending out of river valleys. We mostly follow well maintained gravel lanes and cycle paths. Support vehicle escorts the tour throughout. We have graded the route as easy.

This cycling adventure takes us off the beaten track in Eastern Slovakia. Riding through the foothills of the Levocské Vrchy mountain range, we find beautiful countryside and peaceful villages. Along the way we receive a warm welcome from the local people, and learn about traditional rural life. We also visit historic towns and see magnificent gothic architecture along the route.


ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Kosice. Drive to Levoca and enjoy an orientation walk of the town. Visit the 14th century St. James Cathedral, home to one of Europe’s largest gothic wooden altars. Day 2 On the bikes Cycle through the foothills of the Levocské Vrchy mountain range, stopping to visit a beekeeper and learn about rural life. Day 3 Cergov Mountains Ride though the mountains to the historic town of Bardejov – an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 4 Remote Villages Visit small communities on the way to Svidník. There is the chance to visit a local artist’s atelier. Day 5 Historic battle sites Cycle through the ‘Valley of Death’ in the Dukla Pass: where the Soviet army fought one of the biggest battles of World War II. See old tanks and artillery objects lying scattered in the fields. Travel to Miková. Day 6 To Snina Pedal through some of the most remote rural areas of Slovakia. Day 7 Kosice Explore the eastern Slovakian metropolis. Day 8 Fly to the Uk.
