2011 IN REVIEW Get the best of both worlds

With ‘Ultimate’ Bi-folding Doors from Sliders UK, architects no longer have to sacrifice style for security for what potentially offers the greatest sight lines and access points into a building. Indeed, architects can now benefit from the best of both worlds, by specifying a product that is not only stylish but which is also officially the most secure on the market. In early 2011, Sliders UK set a new standard for bi-fold security and innovation when its ‘Ultimate’ range became the first to be awarded Police Secured by Design accreditation. To date, no other bi-folding door has officially satisfied the stringent security standards set by the Secured by Design initiative, which is operated by the UK’s Association for Chief Police Officers. This means that, in terms of security and crime prevention, Sliders’ ‘Ultimate’ Bi-folding Doors retain ‘Police Preferred Specification’ status. Sliders’ Secured by Design approval followed a period of intensive product development and independent testing, after which it was confirmed that Sliders’ bi-folding doors do in fact stand up to their name in providing ‘ultimate security’ and resistance to guard properties against burglars. Sliders’ ‘Ultimate’ Patio Doors also carry the same Secured by Design approval, having also been the first product in their category to be accredited in 2009. Ian Longbottom, director of Sliders UK says: “Bi-folding doors have become an increasingly popular style choice for traditional and contemporary properties, new build and refurb, alike - linking rooms together and seamlessly joining inside living with outdoor space. However, as they represent a significant investment, it is important that bi-folds not only look good but are fully secure. With our ‘Ultimate’ doors we have achieved both.” The sleek design of Sliders’ ‘Ultimate’ bi-folding doors and its availability in a wide range of colours and woodgrain effect finishes, is combined with an ultra strong PVC/aluminium composite frame as well as a range of enhanced, high security features, to deliver the most innovative and secure bi- folding door available in the UK today. Security features include a uniquely designed, PAS 24 approved hook locking system with kite- marked anti-snap/anti-bump cylinders; secure, low level keep plates; and a strong aluminium sub-frame with quadruple seals on all sash joints. For added assurance and peace of mind, Sliders UK also offers its bi-folds with a 10-year security guarantee. For more information telephone 01772 698 222 or visit www.sliders-uk.com

Geaves achieves FSC

certification for laminates Geaves Surface Solutions achieved the Forest Stewardship Council certification for laminates in 2011. For a long time Geaves has been committed to using sustainable resources from likeminded suppliers, adhering both to the FSC and PEFC standards. As a company, they know how important sustainable materials are to their customers. The FSC sets standards for forest management and promotes the “environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests”. Geaves Surface Solutions has long held both the FSC and PEFC chain of custody certificate for MDF, MFP and wooden worktops, as well as complying with the Environmental Management System Certification ISO 14001:2004. However obtaining the FSC certification for laminate products is a lot more difficult due to the different components that make up the end product. Geaves were really delighted about this formal recognition, which proves their dedication to providing customers with more sustainable products. For more information telephone 01245 329922.

Debut home fabrics

collection launched 2011 saw Johnstons of Elgin launch its first ever home fabrics collection. Inspiration for the collection came from the landscape and heritage of the Scottish countryside. Johnstons of Elgin’s reputation as a manufacturer of fine cloth has long been known, but this is the first time it has used its significant expertise to create luxurious fabrics for the home. Known for its extraordinary cashmere and beautiful tweed products, Johnstons has been manufacturing in Elgin since 1797. It is the only mill in Scotland to take cashmere from fibre to fabric, and is the relied upon manufacturer for international fashion brands and Savile Row tailors alike. The home collection itself consists of three themes, Scottish Heritage, Young Country and Pastoral Elegance. The Scottish Heritage story is inspired by the earthy mixtures and rich nostalgic hues reminiscent of the landscape Highlands of Scotland. The Young Country collection creates a more contemporary and informal feel. Light and airy, these shades were inspired by the simple colours of Scandinavian interiors. Pastoral Elegance’s offering is paler, more feminine and more neutral. For more information telephone 01343554056 or visit www.johnstonscashmere.com
