CONTRACTS AND PROJECTS Levolux makes its mark

The latest flagship store for Marks and Spencer, at Westfield, Stratford City is turning heads, with a dual purpose state-of-the- art Solar Shading solution, courtesy of Levolux. M&S Stratford is one of the company’s largest stores, with 136,000sqft of selling space. It is also one of the company’s most efficient stores, with a surprisingly small carbon footprint. The concept design by Pentagram with implementation by TTG architects, has helped the building to achieve the company’s highest ever BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. The largest ever M&S Cafe juts out from the building’s prominent south-east facing elevation at first floor level, behind a glazed projection, allowing impressive views across east London. To prevent excessive solar heat gain, without loss of daylight, Levolux developed a Solar Shading solution based on its ever-popular Infiniti Fin system. The Levolux solution comprises 44 horizontal, rectangular section Fins, which cover an area measuring 35m wide, by 6.5m high. During the day, the Fins effectively shade the building, reducing the building’s need for artificial cooling and lighting systems. When darkness descends, the Fins are transformed into a giant illuminated billboard, projecting the iconic M&S logo. For more information visit www.levolux.com

Warings supply Energy efficient makeover

Morrisons’ South West Regional Distribution Centre (RDC), a 59-acre goods facility nearing completion at Bridgwater in Somerset, is raising the bar for energy conservation, with an exemplar scheme that uses innovative solar PV and insulated panel technology from Kingspan Insulated Panels to create one of Europe’s most energy efficient logistics facilities. One of the challenges was to transform unproductive roof space into the facility’s own power plant. Following a thorough project analysis by Kingspan’s in- house Renewables design team, two different products from the PowerPanel range were specified for two of the distribution facility’s main buildings to meet that challenge. At the ‘Goods in Warehouse’, FK Construction installed the Roof PowerPanel Laminate System using Topdek KS1000 TD, a single ply insulated membrane roofdeck which had the PV laminate adhered directly to the surface on site. Using 1,548 modules, this system will provide a single-source, insulated, roof and solar PV power source delivering an estimated 197,279kWhrs of energy per annum. For more information telephone 01352 717 251, email info@kingspanpanels.com or visit www.kingspanpanels.com

Jamie’s Italian in Sydney Warings Furniture has won a £30,000 contract to furnish Jamie Oliver’s first Australian restaurant in Sydney. Warings’ experience in fitting out 25 Jamie’s Italian restaurants in the UK helped the company win out against tough opposition in a competitive tender. Stuart Smith, a director at Warings, says the contract’s unusual destination created new challenges for the company, despite its 25 years experience in the industry: “Logistics were a big issue. We had to turnaround the manufacture and delivery of tables and chairs in just five weeks. Everything had to get there safely and so we had to send spare feet, bases and chairs in case of any damages, ensure we had the right documents and even have the container fumigated to meet Australian regulations.” The finished restaurant will hold 180 customers over two levels, including an outdoor

seating area, with an eclectic mix of booths and colourful chairs. The furniture is the same style Warings has provided for other Jamie’s eateries, and is manufactured at the company’s units in the UK and Asia. Adam Heathcote, operations manager and director of the Pacific Restaurant Group Ltd, which owns the rights to Jamie’s Italian restaurants in Australia and New Zealand, said that Warings’ experience was key to the company winning the contract. “Warings provided great customer service and brought valuable experience to the project. The distance was simply not an issue, everything was taken care of and carefully planned - and the result for me is furniture of an impeccable quality that brings the space to life,” he said. Stuart Smith said Warings Furniture’s capabilities as an independent manufacturer, its contacts worldwide and its excellent customer service secured the company’s part in Jamie Oliver’s Australian venture. He added: “We’re proud to offer a one stop shop for clients no matter where they are.” For more information telephone 01603 417 722 or visit www.waringsfurniture.com
