Smart support local children’s hospice
The management and staff at Smart Systems Ltd based in Yatton, North Somerset got into the spirit of Christmas this year by donating £2000 to the Charlton Farm centre of the Children’s Hospice South West. “A lot of money is spent each Christmas by companies sending corporate cards and gifts. Each Christmas for the last few years we’ve decided to use those funds to support a local charity,” Eddie Robinson, Smarts managing director explains. The Charlton Farm centre in Wraxall, North Somerset opened in April 2011, in response to a growing need for additional children’s hospice care in the South West. The professional care teams at Charlton Farm care for children of all ages from all over the South West, offering planned respite or emergency care for the children depending on their individual needs. The centre offers leisure and relaxation facilities for the children such as a comfy lounge, quiet room, messy play area, a multi-sensory room, Jacuzzi, and a teenager’s only room. The centre has eight child- friendly rooms and plenty of accommodation for families. The aim is to make the feel of the hospice a real ‘home from home’ for the children. Accoya passes Teknos test
A two-year test evaluation conducted by Teknos UK Ltd has named Accoya as the best performing wood. In March 2009 Teknos UK Ltd, in conjunction with Vincent Timber, devised a test to provide ‘real life’ data on the performance of three coating systems applied to differing cladding profiles and timber substrates. Four separate test panels were used in the comparison. Each panel consisted of nine boards of the same profile, with three boards from each of the three tested timber species (Western Red Cedar, Siberian Larch and Accoya). Two panels
were constructed using the VT10 profile (two were used so a corner detail could be incorporated into one of the test rigs). The two additional panels used the VT10B and the enhanced Shiplap profiles. These two contained just one ‘cut’ joint in each of the three timber species. Each board was coated using the same application method. After 25 months of being exposed to the Oxfordshire countryside, Vincent Timber inspected the panels. Whilst most panels performed well evident differences in performance were noted, these included weathering of the coating, moisture ingress and cracks in the timber substrate.
