ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
Fire service utilise rainwater
The development of four new fire stations in Gloucester and Cheltenham is an excellent example of how rainwater harvesting benefits both the environment and clients. Gloucestershire Fire Service insisted that the stations had reduced environmental impact whilst still delivering a top quality public service. Rainharvesting Systems Ltd, who for over 10 years has helped companies utilise this natural resource, designed bespoke rainwater harvesting systems that use some of the 800mm annual local rainfall for flushing toilets and grey water functions. Together, the fire stations will have the capacity to replace 2.5 million litres of mains water with rainwater each year – a volume equivalent to an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Over abstraction of water from aquifers, rivers and reservoirs can harm natural habitats in the long-term, so replacing mains water with rainwater helps reduce this impact. Lower bills for water supply and surface water drainage is a welcome additional benefit. For more information telephone 01452 772 000 or visit

Ecosure paints used in Passivhaus project
Coatings from the Dulux Trade Ecosure range have been used in a pioneering housing project in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Ecosure Matt, Ecosure Undercoat and Ecosure Gloss were chosen for the interior of eight award-winning, energy saving affordable homes at Dormont Estate near Lockerbie. The properties, which have been designed by local architects, White Hill Design Studio, were built to Passivhaus standard by contractors CCG (Scotland) Ltd, and are the first of their kind to be rolled out on a commercial scale in Scotland. Each property is fitted with solar thermal panels, recycled air heating systems and ultra insulation, all of which reduce energy costs by around 95 percent compared to traditional properties. The Dulux Trade Ecosure collection is a water- based range of coatings developed to help decorators and contractors deliver genuine sustainable improvements, while maintaining the highest performance standards when it comes to durability, opacity and colour clarity. The paints are the product of a major research initiative with independent sustainability experts,

including green roof systems, photovoltaic energy roof systems and heat reflective membranes, at this years Ecobuild exhibition at ExCel, London, on the 20th – 22nd March. These products demonstrate IKO’s belief that roofs will not just be something considered to waterproof, but will be a valuable contribution to energy conservation and the environment. IKO’s photovoltaic energy roof systems present an attractive solution for generating green energy, whilst ensuring the internal temperature of a building remains comfortable. The IKO Solar offer includes a range of system technologies, including thin film flexible modules, which are adhered to the roof surface, and poly-crystalline rigid panels, which can be loose-laid (with ballast) onto virtually any roof surface. The IKO Solar PV range is compatible with IKO’s unique range waterproofing systems, from polymeric single ply, to bituminous membranes, mastic asphalt, cold applied liquids and hot melt. LESS REALLY IS MORE
Manufactured by one of the largest boiler manufacturers in the Netherlands and Europe, Intergas double condensing units deliver up to 95.8 percent efficiency in hot water mode, have a DHW self-learning eco setting, exceptionally low standby losses of virtually zero and a unique heat exchanger. They also have much fewer parts than alternative products, with just 12 components and only four moving parts. In
addition, they are the only double condensing units available in the UK, meaning they condense 100 percent of the time. Intergas products come with a 22-year track record. A three-year standard warranty is provided on each boiler and a 10-year mechanical failure warranty on the heat exchanger. For more information telephone 01527 888 000 or visit
