Under the new privatisation plans all casinos will be privatised, which means the Mont Parnes government stake is to be sold. The first casino to operate in Greece after privatisation of the sector in 1995 was Porto Carras and was opened by American company Casino Magic in May 1995. It was later sold to a Canadian group and closed in September 1999. The operation reopened in July 2003


There are currently nine casinos in Greece. Three of the 12 licences never completed their tender process and were not finalised and later in 2003 when the law changed the three licences were then cancelled. The casinos in Greece include:


loutraki The Casino Loutraki opened in 1995 and is attached to the Club Hotel Loutraki in Perahora, one of Greece’s most renowned spa resorts and about 80km from Athens. The casino initially comprised of a twin level gaming area of 2,650sq.m featuring 700 gaming machines ranging from video reel, touchscreen and mechanical reel games and 70 table games. This was expanded in 2005 to 4,730sq.m and today


there are just over 1,000 slots (with 200 different games in 11 different denominations) and 97 tables. The casino also features a VIP room.


The five star Club Hotel Casino Loutraki overlooks the largest beach in Loutraki and has 268 rooms including 13 suites and four restaurants. It underwent improvements in 2008 including a €2.9m renovation of the casino hall. It is managed by Club Hotel Loutraki which is a joint venture between the Municipality of Loutraki and the multinational holding company of Club Hotel Loutraki, which is the administrator and chief investor of the casino. Others involved includes Casinos Austria International, EFG Eurobank Ergasias and Queenco. Queenco Leisure International currently manages two of Greece’s nine casinos under exclusive gaming licence. Club Hotel Casino Loutraki is a joint venture interest of which QLI holds 38.5 per cent interest and this casino is believed to be the leading casino in terms of drop and win and has around one million visitors per year. QLI has 91.6 per cent of the shares in Rhodes Casino. The group operates a total of approximately 1,650 slots and 160 tables.
