Overview Slovenia is a small market and fairly limited in terms of growth. Slots and multiplayers can only be operated in casinos and gaming halls and gaming tables can only be operated solely in casinos. There are limits on the number of operations permitted and also restrictions as to where such operations can be opened. Casinos can be operated only in local tourist communities where there are over 40,000 inhabitants and foreign tourist visitors expected. According to the gaming act the government can award up to 15 concessions for casinos and up to 45 concessions for gaming halls.


GGR for the gaming industry was as follows - €177.2m for casinos compared to €213.5m in 2009 and €132.1m for gaming halls compared to €136.5m in 2009. The highest growth for the casino industry was between 2004 and 2008 whilst growth halted in 2009 and 2010. Casinos have 47 per cent of the market in Slovenia followed by gaming halls with 35 per cent and lottery with 17 per cent. The gaming sector paid a total of €57.2m in taxes in 2010. The nine casinos are operated by HIT and saw a total of 2.1 million visitors last year.
