Viewpoint ANNUAL MARKET REVIEW PilgriMage a gaMing

The G3 annual Market Review is the result of our annual pilgrimage into the deep dark depths of statistics and figures bringing you the most up-to-date information on the European market.

Policing gaMing while atteMPting to unshackle it is Proving More than a little taxing for already stressed-out Politicians

We begin compiling the Annual Review in October and across a three month period we conduct a hard-target search of every Gaming Board, Gaming Association, operator, distributor, gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse across the continent. We’re really that thorough.

Many of the markets we covered over the course of 2011 changed markedly as the economic crisis in Europe deepened. Governments have hastily reconfigured their legislative and taxation structures accordingly with gaming promoted as the

‘saviour of gaming’ across a host of EU markets all desperate for revenue.

Online gaming has also had a bigger impact on the land-based sector than ever before as governments have merged once separate legislative policies to cover all in branching gaming acts that control, and tax, both sectors.

Some of this legislation makes sense, some is just wafer-thin fancy. Policing gaming while attempting to unshackle it is proving more than a little taxing for the already stressed-out politicians.

To help unravel exactly what’s happening in each market, while backing up analysis with statistics, for the fifth year running we have compiled and updated data covering 20 European countries. The statistical information in this report includes figures on locations, various products from slots to video games to gaming tables, revenues and a general overview of each country’s legislative developments.

The central idea driving this review is to provide the global gaming industry with indispensable data for each European country in one easy reference guide. This year’s review further contains a series of in-depth market reports published in G3 magazine and the G3i App during 2011, which includes: Cyprus, Greece, Malta part, Italy and Georgia.

We’d like to thank all those that have helped to contribute to this report, either overtly or anonymously (only you know who you are). As always the input from the various associations, government bodies and helpful souls out there is very much appreciated as is the sponsorship of Bally Technologies.
