Overview Germany is made up of four main products groups – AWPs, amusements, sports machines and internet terminals – and operates under the AWP Gaming Regulation of 2006 which since it was installed in the market has set the conditions for commercial gaming which included the removal of some 80,000 fun games. The market is a difficult one and the casinos have seen tough competition over recent years with the new private gaming halls opening up in the country. There is now a tendency to open larger premises on multiple concessions.
However a new law proposed which is due to come into effect in January 2012 could now see some 10,000 arcades closed and the removal of up to 100,000 AWPs. Some 16 Lander state heads want to ban multi-concession halls with a five year operating time for existing halls if the regulation is approved. There is also a suggestion to reduce the number of AWPs from three to two in food and drink establishments. Total GGR for the gaming sector last year was €9.5bn of which €5.12bn came from the gaming and amusement sector.
