PPMA 2011 REVIEW PART II Eliminating errors
AutoCoding Systems, specialists in the automation of packaging line devices, has worked in consultation with a major retailer to implement guidelines to ensure all products supplied to them always have the right packaging, label and date code. Suppliers should subject each finished product pack to an on-line automatic system to verify the use of the correct product packaging and coding. Each packaging line is controlled by a line terminal which communicates with a central database holding key product information and relevant coding profiles,
including date rules, promotions and concessions relating to individual SKUs. Data is pushed to the relevant line devices thus eliminating the need for manual set- up with the associated risk of error. Packaging is verified by scanning of a 2D code, or other mark, to ensure the correct packaging components are continuously used during a production run. AutoCoding Systems works with all the major coding, labelling and packaging equipment companies and can integrate to a wide range of packaging line equipment, irrespective of manufacturer. 8For more information call 01928 790444 or email

Handheld execution
Also revealed at PPMA was Harford Control’s powerful Manufacturing Execution System, which is now ready to be used on tablet computers running Android, the increasingly popular operating system for mobile devices. Combining the benefits of conventional gun-style handhelds and static terminals, tablet computers are highly mobile and offer a decent sized screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, with its 7inch touchscreen, WiFi and camera offers the best conditions to use all features of the new software. Roy Green, Managing Director of Harford Control, explains: “The possible applications are nearly endless, ranging from roving quality checks to engineer attendance, to Health and Safety checks in the production area. We recognised that in most manufacturing environments both engineers and supervisors need to be highly mobile. To save time and enable faster communication, we introduced the new Android handhelds. We are very confident that our new mobile terminals will live up to the expectations of our current and future customers.” 8For more information call 01225 764461, email

New tray sealer
Whilst debuting at the show, VC999 Packaging Systems also showed its new VC999 TS1500 tray sealing machine. The VC999 TS1500 is a compact, efficient and fully automated tray sealing machine for medium to large scale production. With the VC999, countless individual packaging solutions can be realised says the company. The machine concept of the VC999 TS1500 features multiple lanes. On three lanes (or an optional four lanes), pre-made trays of all kind of shapes are sealed simultaneously with a top film. The VC999 TS1500 offers the operation modes seal only, vacuum gas (MAP) or gas flush. The machine achieves a production capacity of six to 10 cycles per
£200K order for UPM
UPM conveyors solved a problem for a client wherein they had to feed two different types of vegetables and fruit to a multihead weigher. They did this by incorporating two elevators into one support frame, with each fed via a vibratory feeder into the stainless steel receiving hoppers, achieving a total throughput of 1900kgs per hour. As a result, the satisfied customer visited the PPMA
minute for vacuum gas/gas flush and of 10 to 13 cycles for seal only. Packages can be produce with outside or inside cut. 8For more information call 01604 643999, email

Show and confirmed an order with UPM at their stand for a further ten systems, totalling circa £200K. In the systems purchased, quick access for belt cleaning is achieved by sliding in a feed top plate and pulling out the hopper section, releasing tension on the belt, allowing easy full pressure wash down. 8For more information call 01753 548801, email
