‘GO ANYWHERE’ CODING The new SmartDate® X40 thermal transfer coder was a highlight for Markem-

Imaje at the PPMA Show. Seen as the natural successor to the company’s best-selling SmartDate 2 and 3 printers, the X40 is already hard at work on hundreds of packing lines, reducing operating costs and increasing sustainability. Delivering market-leading reliability across a wide range of applications – from bagging, flow-wrapping, tray sealing and labelling, to sachets, pouches and vacuum packs – the SmartDate X40 is today’s cost-effective solution for hard- pressed retail suppliers. Large amounts of complex information such as date and traceability codes, ingredients, nutritional and promotional details can be overprinted onto packs and labels at high speeds. Print quality is all you’d expect from the thermal transfer technology leader, but this is matched by the operational economy of the new coder. The SmartDate X40 incorporates a number of state- of-the-art ribbon-saving features, and is designed for minimal maintenance. This helps users eliminate unscheduled stoppages and control their coding costs, ultimately watching their bottom line. p

THE UK’S BEST-KEPT

CODING SECRET? The reaction of customers at the show to the new Markem-Imaje inkjet flagship was a mixture of delight and curiosity. Impressed by the performance and economy of the 9232; intrigued by the apparently sudden emergence of Markem-Imaje as a front-runner in liquid inkjet technology. The new Markem-Imaje 9232 (right) is all you’d expect from a market-leading printer, printing high quality date codes, logos, alphanumeric text, 1D and 2D barcodes along with other product and traceability information at speeds of up to 6.6m/sec. Controlled from a colour touch-screen panel, set-up is quick and easy. Real-time data about machine status, ink usage and maintenance procedures is clearly displayed. The ink cartridges, now with an even longer life-span, can be changed without mess, and without stopping the coding opertion. With a compact print-head and toughened umbilical line, the 9232 can withstand severe factory conditions. Housed in an IP55 stainless steel cabinet, the printer doesn’t require an air supply. It can be mounted vertically or on a table- top, so that the 9232 fits easily into the most challenging production lines. Markem-Imaje offers a unique commitment to its customers, promising a 20 per cent reduction in ownership costs over existing competitor’s equipment. p

CHOOSING YOUR NEW INKJET

At the show, Markem-Imaje were keen to advise their customers on how to choose their inkjet technology, as, after a long and colourful history, small character inkjet coding has finally come of age. When choosing an inkjet coder, there are things to consider, says the company, including print quality, ease of integration, maintenance requirements, ease of use, connectivity and cost. With regards to print quality, Markem-Imaje says that under ideal conditions, most inkjet coders will deliver a well-formed, legible print, but how many can do so throughout a long production run in a challenging factory environment? When it comes to integration, you’ll need a unit that’s versatile enough to tackle all your coding requirements, yet it will also need to be light and compact so it can be mounted anywhere and moved from one factory location to another without fuss. Maintenance, meanwhile, is a critical measure of inkjet performance. To reduce the need for human intervention, and ensure first-time print quality on start-up, ask about

automatic nozzle rinsing which keeps the interior of the print head free from ink build-up. Check how frequently you’ll need to change filters, and pay particular attention to the way consumables are managed. In terms of ease of use – what is the control panel like? Does it give you all the information you need to work with? Can it deal with operational issues? Also, connectivity – does it connect to external devices easily? Does it consider networking, centralized code management and data links to and from the ERP system? And make sure you have compared costs across the industry as well as looking at long-term vs. short-term costs. p
