confidential patient and equipment information.”

With this track record in place, Strickland commented that Allocate Software has a bank of experience from which sites can draw. “Our approach is to ensure all customers are provided with as much support as they require during the implementation, installation and follow-up stages,” he said. “With the amount of experience that we now have, we can provide recommendations on how best to use our software to match and optimise their own operational set-up and requirements, whilst also keeping an eye on management information needs from the viewpoint of the service as a whole.”

The launch of the re-designed version of Pocket MESaLS for deliveries has prompted one of the company’s biggest customers, Gateshead Equipment Services, to purchase four new handhelds. “These will assist them in delivering equipment to the patient quicker, while also enabling the drivers to accurately record barcode numbers on the equipment so that we can track and trace it,” said Strickland. “It also speeds up the data entry process for recording that information on the system.”

The software on the handheld devices allows users to download delivery and stock information via a docking cradle, which is attached to a desktop computer. This downloads from the web application through the PC on to the handheld. “This is all done securely with the requirement for user names and passwords, which are encrypted,” Strickland pointed out. “At Gateshead there are different levels of data access on the web application based on individuals’ job role. There is a separate log-on procedure for the drivers who use the handhelds. The information stored on the handhelds is all fully encrypted, which is of course expected as we are holding

On-premise or Cloud options Gateshead’s data storage system is fully web-based written using a variety of development tools, but mostly .Net and .ASP. The back office is SQL. “As product manager I oversee the whole project and am responsible for the developers and what they do; including software design and the features that need to be included,” said Strickland. In terms of back-office software, Strickland explained that Allocate Software can provide on-premise versions for sites that want to host it on their own infrastructure; Gateshead is one example of this. The company can also offer a fully managed hosted service via a Cloud environment. This is based on a sub- contractor arrangement that we have with a BrightCloud.

With regard to Cloud-based projects, another Allocate Software client, Norfolk Community Healthcare, recently invested in 20 M3 Sky handheld devices. Norfolk Community Healthcare uses the application through Allocate Software’s flexible hosting Cloud application, and uses the handhelds to manage the logistics of delivery and collection; in a similar fashion to Gateshead Equipment Services and around 40 other Allocate Software customer sites around the UK. 
