Optimising efficiency at the point of service


IT Reseller spoke with Nigel Owens, Motion Computingʼs senior vice president of worldwide sales and GM of EMEA, and Mary Anne Gunn, Motionʼs director of corporate communications, about the key mobile Point of Service advantages a variety of vertical sectors can gain through deploying proven mobile tablet PCs.

n today’s mission-critical business environment, service providers within a host of vertical sectors have to ensure a high level of customer or patient satisfaction while also ensuring that they themselves are working in as time- and cost-effective manner as possible. In recent times many VARs have become aware of the benefits afforded to their customers within sectors such as retail & hospitality, healthcare, construction and field service through the use of mobile tablet PCs. Such benefits can include everything from improved accuracy to faster turnaround times. These benefits and more can be driven by a number of key benefits that market-proven tablet PCs afford; including real-time access to business information at the point of service, and the ability to view detailed graphics – such as maps and design drawings – that may not be as readable on smaller mobile devices. And through being able to access these and a host of other types of data, tablet PCs can also


facilitate quicker and more accurate decision making. Other benefits can include a high level of durability due to the ruggedness of certain tablet PCs’ form factor, extended battery life and ease of integration with back-office or other systems.


Best fit


Motion Computing has embraced the term Point of Service to encapsulate the core benefits and raison d'être of its ranges of tablet PCs. Motion’s Mary Anne Gunn provided the background: “When we first launched the C5 Mobile Clinical Assistant tablet PC we talked a lot about Point of Care. We then realised that a lot of the mobility challenges that mobile workers face is at the point where they’re seeking to get their jobs done as efficiently as possible, whether that’s in terms of Point of Field Service, Point of Retail Service, Point of Construction and so on. So we started thinking about both the ideal mobile solutions and the integration requirements that are needed


for just about any type of mobile worker. This is why we have generalised these requirements under the term Point of Service.” Nigel Owens added that Point of Service from Motion’s perspective is all about having a range of products ready to deploy in a number of key verticals. With this in mind, he explained that the company works with its technology partners to ensure customers are provided with the very best fit, both from a hardware, software and peripherals perspective.


Retail & hospitality One of Motion’s target vertical markets concerning Point of Service is retail & hospitality – particularly based around the company’s CL900 tablet PC offering. Within this environment, Owens points out that fixed till-type systems can be seen in a range of outlets, such as those used for POS at supermarket checkouts. However, he adds that tablet PCs are now being used in a variety of other ways that are highly beneficial for the retail or hospitality company. “For example, our own F Series or a C Series can be used as assisted selling type devices,” he said. “These devices are highly ergonomic and can be handed to customers in order for them to see products they might be interested in buying – whether it’s furniture or a car, or whether they’re looking to purchase computer or printing equipment and so on.”


With regard to Motion’s CL range, Owens explained that, because it runs on an Atom-based processor, it doesn’t require lots of power if the user organisation is running a wireless back office. And to address the US retail marketplace, which is traditionally Swipe
