First edition. edgard tytgat (1879-1957) was a Belgian painter, printmaker, etcher and watercolorist who illustrated many books including Little Red Riding Hood and The Magic Flute. he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels where he forged friendships with other future artists including rik Wouters and Fernand Verhaegen. his style is impressionist, often described as naïve, and is imbued with a gentle poetry. in his Preface to this work tytgat recalls his fond memories of local village fairs in his homeland: “Pour mieux sentir les charmes dans les moeurs et les coutumes de son pays, il faut en être exilé. ainsi mes quatre années véçues à londres, me font miroiter en souvenirs, toutes les étincelles des perles sur le velour[s] noir et des petites glaces aux mille et un reflets ornant les carrousels et baraques de mon village...”.
