greville’s Memoirs provide a fascinating insight into the monarchy. as a clerk of the council in ordinary he was able to observe from within the daily workings of court and to record the private causes that led to public incidents.

small folio (312 x 195 mm). recent quarter calf over the original marbled paper covered boards, rubbed, morocco and gilt label to the spine; 1f., pp. ii, 52, 85 engraved plates (illustration within the text on p.3 numbered as plate i, the remaining plates numbered ii-XXii, 23-85, including 3 folding plates), various typographic headpieces and 1 woodcut tail-piece; two incisions to the lower half of the title, expertly repaired, neat repairs to small tears in the inner margins of pls 58 and 67, light marginal dustmarks, otherwise a bright, clean copy.

First edition, second issue. the title and contents as those of the first issue published the same year but with the names of the publishers James rivington and J. Fletcher added to that of robert sayer. Divided into three parts, the first is an edition of Palladio’s first book on the orders, illustrated with the original copperplates from colen campbell’s edition of Palladio’s First Book of Architecture published in 1729. this is followed by previously unpublished designs for town and country houses, estate offices and stables by William halfpenny and robert Morris, both dead by 1757, and one by timothy lightholer, who, harris and savage note, may have also acted as editor. the volume concludes with designs for architectural details such as windows, fireplaces and gate piers. rare. although well represented in american institutional libraries, complete copies of the present work seldom appear at auction.
