(283 x 232 mm). early twentieth century half red burgundy calf over cloth covered boards, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers; pp. [xiv] (including 9pp. subscribers’ list) , [i], ii-v, [i], 2-78, [1f.], publisher’s advert to the recto announcing the publication of the second edition of Price’s The British Carpenter first issued in 1733, 14 finely etched plates, (1-13 numbered, 1, un-numbered), including 1 folding, by Foudrinier after drawings by Price; the corners of the binding lightly scuffed, occasional light foxing, otherwise a bright copy.


Provenance: 1. robert travers with his neat ink inscription to the head of the the title ‘ex libris roberti travers a.M.M.B. e coll. ss. trinitatis, Dublinii’. 2. robert Frederick green with his printed book label dated 1909 to the front pastedown.

First edition. Dedicated to thomas sherlock, Bishop of london, who, as the Bishop of salisbury from 1738-48 had asked Price, as the cathedral’s clerk of Works, to survey the structure prior to effecting repairs. sir howard colvin notes that the Observations ‘is notable as the first serious attempt to describe and analyse a major gothic building.’ (h. colvin. A Biographical Dictionary of Architects 1600-1840. 3rd edition.1995. p. 779). as well as describing the decayed state of the building and the repairs undertaken, Price includes extracts from notes made by Wren in his 1668 survey and historical details, translated from a medieval manuscript, of the first cathedral at old sarum and the founding of the present structure.


unfortunately Price did not live to see publication of the survey, dying just three months previously in March, 1753. he was buried in the cloisters of the cathedral


the subscribers’ list includes the names of the architects robert Morris, thomas edwards and William robinson, as well a number of builders and carpenters.

landscape folio. original red cloth-backed embossed pictorial boards; pp. [80]; illustrated with 18 fine, and glorious, full colour plates printed on thick coated stock; a fine, and exceptional, copy preserved in extremely clean and fresh condition, both internally and externally; extremely scarce, particularly in this condition.


First u.s. edition. a beautifully produced volume including artwork from various Peek-A-Boo titles and displaying it in an enlarged and de luxe format. the coloured images, which stand out starkly from the stark white backgrounds, have a stunning three-dimensional quality. the first Peek- a-Boo title was published in 1910. Many more followed throughout the first decade of the twentieth century.


Not listed in the British Library catalogue, on OCLC/WorldCat (Online Computer Libraries Center), or NUC, and not even included in the bibliography at the rear of the standard reference work on the artist chloe Preston and the Peek-a-Boos by Mary Hillier (1998).

4to. contemporary mauve cloth, gilt-lettered, sometime rebacked preserving much of the original spine, tears to the spine cloth expertly repaired, duplicate of the etched title pasted to the upper board; part hand- coloured etched tile and 21 etched plates, each with the original glazed paper guard; scattered spotting throughout, otherwise a good copy.

4to. (296 x 240 mm). original green cloth with an impression of the title- page printed on india paper to the upper board; engraved title and 26 etched plates, with legends hand-coloured in red, occasional light scattered spotting to the verso of the plates, otherwise a bright, clean copy.


Provenance: Joseph goldstein with his bookplate to the front pastedown.


First edition. Published without a letterpress title-page and text and made up entirely of plates the present work is devoted to Pugin’s designs for a variety of iron and brass ware that include locks, keys, hinges, fire dogs, and grates.
