8vo. original pale green cloth, green rules, lettering and laurel wreath design to front, green rules to back, gilt lettering to spine; pp. viii + 259 + [4, ads.], frontispiece with original delicate watercolour decorations of flowers by previous owner throughout, including ffep, dedication page, head- and tail-pieces, with calligraphic inscription in brown ink of isaiah 61.11 to verso of dedication page; spine a little sunned, very good, unique thus. Provenance: signature of t.P. newman to ffep. given that this handwriting is the same as that of the Biblical inscription, it is reasonable to identify newman as the artist behind the very colourful and attractive illustrations.


First edition. s. reynolds hole was the Dean of rochester and the author of a number of popular books on flowers and gardens. this book is written in his typical conversational style, with observations on gardening mixed with character studies and personal reminiscences.

First edition. the British birdwatcher henry eliot howard (1873 - 1940), author of the celebrated British Warblers, was most noted amongst naturalists for this work on territoriality. howard observed that male birds, rather than competing for females as classical and Darwinist biology presumed, in fact fought over territory and status. this little book proved to be a ground-breaking and influential work; in its wake biologists such as Konrad lorenz and edward o. Wilson extended the study of territoriality and social hierarchy to other species, including humans.
