279. [steVenson, robert louis] allinGHam, William. Blackberries Picked off Many Bushes by D Pollex and others Put in a Basket by W. allingham. G. Philip & Son. 1884.
£2,500
8vo., original green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and upper board with single gilt panel and gilt roundel to upper board. a handsomely printed edition with engraved head and tail-pieces and initial letters. a little rubbing to joints and spine otherwise a very good copy.
First edition. From the library of robert louis stevenson, with his personal bookplate (as opposed to the posthumous Vailima bookplate that isobel stevenson created when selling stevenson’s library after his death) to front. pastedown & numerous pencil markings & critical annotations in his hand throughout. this title was issued concurrently with allingham’s Day and Night Songs in June 1884; on 25th of May stevenson wrote to his parents asking them to purchase a copy of the latter for him (see Booth & Mehew iV, pp.297-98). it is probable this other copy of allingham’s poems was sent at the same time. a pleasing association - allingham and stevenson were the leading exponents of poetry for children at the end of the nineteenth century.
stevenson’s pencilled comments are interesting—he writes: “he dashed it off!” alongside the poem beginning “clergy” on p.33; “who is elu?” at the poem beginning “o Were” on p.75; “the antlion?” pointing to the name “cadling” on p.88; “+ rhymes too” at the poem beginning “Writing” on p.99; “is this it?” at the poem beginning “the Bard” on p.105; “hear hear!” at the final poem on p.153., “Whitman on p.170.
*there are pencilled “X”s & vertical lines alongside many of the poems, as well as a few underscored words.
