250. roWlinG, J.K. (author). harry Potter and the chamber of secrets. London, Bloomsbury. 1998.

£1,850

8vo. original blue and white printed paper covers with a design, in white, of stars and a magic wand to top half of upper wrapper; pp. [vii], 8-252; a fine copy with no evidence of handling; scarce thus.

First uncorrected proof copy of the second work in the harry Potter series. the half-titles and titles were reset for the published edition and the verso of the title-page differs from the published copy. in the proof the dedication is yet unwritten and there are no advertisements included at the rear.

-sold together with: a proof copy of the original pictorial dustwrapper for the first hardback edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets which differs in significant and interesting ways from the final printed version. the upper panel does not have the blue circular panel announcing J.K. rowling as the winner of the 1997 Smartie’s Award and a shortlisted author for the 1997 Carnegie Medal. the black banner at the bottom edge of the upper panel has the quotation “inventive and action-packed” The Bookseller rather than ‘“a Wizards story in every sense” nicolette Jones Sunday Times’. the lower panel is set in different typeface and includes a larger image of hogwarts’ castle. the price to the inner flap on the proof is £9.99 rather than the eventual published price of £10.99 and also has a white printed strip along the upper flap with measurements, date and price of £9.99.

this dustwrapper proof is very scarce indeed and must be one of only a very small number produced. We have not come across another example.
