a charming guide book to the pilgrimage site of the santa casa di loreto in the province of ancona, italy.
the santa casa, or holy house is traditionally believed by catholics to be the house in nazareth in which Mary grew up, received the annunciation, and returned to with Joseph, after the birth of Jesus. in 336 the empress helena had undertaken a pilgrimage to nazareth and directed that a basilica should be built over the house and worship continued here until the fall of the Jerusalem by the Mamluks. tradition has it that, threatened with destruction by saladin’s troops, the house was translated from the holy land by angels in 1291 to a site in modern-day croatia, before being miraculously borne across the adriatic to the eastern coast of italy in 1294, finally coming to rest at its present location in 1295.
as a focus for miracles and pilgrims, it was only a matter of time before a basilica was constructed over the new site, and a four-sided screen within the basilica built around the sacred house itself. What had started as a late gothic building was further enlarged and embellished over time by giuliano da sangallo, Bramante, girolamo lombardo and his sons, Melozzo da Forli, signorelli, Domenichino and guido reni. Between 1750 and 1754 the architect Vantelli added a campanile into which a bell, presented by leo X in 1516, and weighing eleven tons was hung.

the four sides of the screen containing the sacred house represent the annunciation, the nativity, the arrival of the santa casa at loreto and the nativity of the Virgin, respectively, each of these are described and depicted in the present guide, along with a folding plan of the basilica and woodcuts of the façade, campanile and cult statue.
