£188
4to. original beige cloth-backed cream pictorial handcoloured boards; pp. [vii], 8-54 + [i]; with 24 fine and striking plates, all handcoloured through stencils; a nice copy of a very scarce and vulnerable book; externally considerably dust-soiled with occasional small, and light, marking, two small scuff marks to surface paper on upper board (20mm x 8mm and 3mm x 5mm), the first removing the “y” of “by” in the title lettering, one pale ring mark to lower cover, with small wear to corner tips, rubbing to edges, light marking to cloth at base of spine and a little incipient splitting to paper at inner upper hinge.
First edition of this very unusual, expensively produced, and finely illustrated volume with handcolouring throughout, produced by a very minor publisher. araminta Popkins’ Prue is a doll who is christened by the local vicar who, quite understandably, continually gets her name wrong.

Due to a legal mix-up Potter’s english publisher failed to secure copyright on The Tale of Peter Rabbit in the united states, which resulted in a rash of pirated editions.
