an original watercolour (image size 155 x 179mm) painted on cream card and set behind a skilfully handcut acid-free window mount shadowing the outline of the image; the picture shows the wicked witch taking chicken bones from the caged figure of hansel as gretel signals her intention to steal the key to his prison; a delightful and vibrantly coloured painting with some marking to the margins of the watercolour, but this confined to the edges, and invisible beneath the mount.


this watercolour is sold with a recent reprint of Hansel & Gretel (geddes & grosset, 1995) in which it is reproduced on page 18.


the first edition appeared in the Silver Thimble Series, published by Blackie & son limited.

4to. original yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards, decorated cloud endpapers, preserved in the original, and very elusive, grey printed dustwrapper with reviews of Flora’s Feast and Queen Summer to inner flap, and several other spielmann publications to lower flap; pp. [44] on French-folded leaves (unopened as intended); with coloured illustrations surrounding the text which is printed in calligraphic font; externally and internally a very fine copy indeed with just a few minor spots to endleaves; the very scarce dustwrapper neatly reassembled with archival tissue on the reverse and now preserved in unusually good state with some soiling and rubbing to upper panel, chipping to head and tail of spine, one 120mm (nearly closed) tear to lower joint fold (now neatly repaired) and a little minor fraying to edges; scarce with the dustwrapper.

8vo. original red cloth lettered in black; pp. [vi], [9]-256; with line- drawings throughout; externally unusually bright, clean, and sharp with just a faint suggestion of sun-lightening to spine and one tiny surface nick (2mm) to cloth at base of spine; internally also very fresh, with the usual minor age-toning throughout and a little light faint speckling to half-title and edges of book block; scarce in bright condition.


First edition.the tenth William title, following the first in the series Just William, which was published in 1922.
