118. Forster, e m. typed letter signed (‘eM Forster’) to Bevis hillier declining the position of honorary President of the augustus egg society, with three corrections to the manuscript, King’s College, Cambridge, 27th november 1961, 8vo., one page watermarked ‘excelsior superfine British Make’, folded for posting, slight creasing to upper right corner, nonetheless fresh.

noted art critic, (1940-)

£128 and

Betjeman’s biographer, Bevis hillier

attended

Magdalen, oxford in the early 1960s where he founded the augustus egg society as a means of making friends, choosing egg principally for his ‘funny name’. Members of the society included future academics

and writers

nicholas orme and David Bindman. through indian friends – such as Bollywood star and playwright girish Karnad – he became involved with the oxford Majlis, a club which looked to foster good relations between east and West. e.M. Forster lectured to

the club in november 1961 which is where hillier encountered him and this led to him writing to Forster asking him to become President of the society. Despite the youthful confidence the letter displayed Forster was not moved and replied with a short but carefully sarcastic letter declining the signal honour as he knew ‘too little about him to be eligible’ as an ‘immortalizer’ of egg. augustus egg (1816–1863) was a Victorian genre and history painter who was one of the founders of the clique, an informal sketching society set up by a group of young artists in reaction to the limited teaching then offered at the royal academy schools. offered with a typed page by Bevis hillier explaining the background to the letter.
