Retro has also learned that the Students Union has raised these concerns with the local Assembly Member Jenny Rathbone and requested that these concerns are raised with the Education Minister Leighton Andrews. Nichola James President of the Students Union commented, “we have submitted a response to the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, expressing our concern at the proposals to merge three Universities, making it one of the largest urban University in the UK with over 40 thousand students with no regard, research or consultation on the impact to the student experience. These latest reports confirm our concerns about the students having to potentially move out of Cardiff, and a reduction in local delivery of education to the student population in Wales”.

The Cyncoed campus currently has around 500 students in accommodation, houses the School of Sport and Education and is the traditional home of all the UWIC sports teams that

compete in national leagues. It is not known at this stage how they would be covered to continue competing in these competitions.

UWIC , now Cardiff Metropolitan University following the change of name from 1st November , has submitted its response to the Funding Council stating that it sees its future in Cardiff as a strong performing stand alone University . The results of the consultation process are expected to be announced in the next couple of weeks, however it is already known that Aberystwyth and Bangor University are against the idea of merging and Glyndwr University in North Wales have campaigned vigorously against the plan.

With the recent debacle of the University of Wales and the embarrassment that this has caused to Higher Education in Wales both nationally and across the world, should the Government now plan for some stability in the sector and work with the Universities to raise standards and reputations of all Universities in Wales rather than pushing through proposals which are going to further destabilise the sector and affect a huge geographical area of Wales?
