Zaffar, Hopes to have Big Impact onUWIC Rugby
By SHIVANI NAIK The Indian Express Newspaper
KOLKATA, where Zaffar grew up as a refugee, initiated him into the rough tumbles of rugby. And after an emotional return to his birthplace in Kabul last summer, where he helped set up the foundations of the national Afghan rugby team. 25-year-old Zaffar Khan, is now readying to live his rugby-adventure in Wales, where he has found a toehold into the coaching setup of UWIC rugby.
Appointed on the coaching team of the RAGs by former Welsh U21 coach Chris Davey - Khan wants
to make the most of this opening offered to him in a country where it is famously said that rugby is as Welsh as coal mining.
There’s some curiosity about the new Afghan on the field simply called ‘Rugby’ but Khan promises to not back off from a challenge. “Culturally it is a platform for both me to know the Welsh, and for the local boys to know an Afghan - an Indian,” he stresses on his dual- identity, encased comfortably within his English language education.
