By Susan King UWIC Nursing Department

Don’t be alarmed, be informed, read on and if you have the symptoms go to your GP or local pharmacist and use the treatment correctly.

What is Scabies? Scabies is caused by a tiny mite called Sarcoptes Scabiei, which burrows into the skin to lay eggs. The adult mite then dies and the larvae hatch and grow, living off the skin of the host.

How do I get Scabies? Scabies is passed from person to person via skin to skin contact. Scabies is not a sexually Transmitted Disease, as was previously thought, but will be passed on to sexual partners, it can also be caught from shared towels, clothes and beds.

If I think I have Scabies what should I do? If you think you have Scabies or know you have been in contact with someone who has it, it is advisable to go to your GP or the local GUM (Genito Urinary Medicine) Clinic to ensure the correct diagnosis. It is possible to buy the treatment from the local Pharmacist. It is important that you use the correct treatment for Scabies and not a treatment for Head lice, so if you are buying it ask the Pharmacist for advice.
