A classy performance from newly promoted Men’s Hockey first’s against bitter local rivals Cardiff earned a 5-0 win in there second game of the BUCS Premier League South.


For years Cardiff have been the dominant team when it comes to one of the best games of the UWIC hockey season, but things are starting to change with the momentum of an ever confident squad named Team of the Year at the annual UWIC Sports Awards last year. Engulfed by a winning spirit that has developed over a two-year process of development and promotion under coach Danny Newcombe, the team managed a cool, calm, and professional performance against Cardiff.


After a shock last minute defeat to Bath in the opening game of the season it was clear that UWIC had a point to prove in this game. Before the match Newcombe stressed the importance of not over-hyping the derby and for individuals to concentrate on doing their jobs well in order for the team to win together. From an early stage in the game UWIC established control with relative ease, negotiating play effectively and were consistently on the front foot both in attack and defence. Cardiff struggled to string possession together as UWIC considered attacks by building up play from the back and often stretching Cardiff.
