INNOVATION Multisaw’s Titan Hybrid range is gaining interest in overseas markets
The Titan Hybrid range has given sawmillers a more affordable option as they look to upgrade
that companies have been struggling to push through capital expenditure – the
boards of sawmilling groups have basically been holding back on expenditure taking the position that they would be better off waiting until the economy was on better footing. “The Titan Hybrid line – though still considered a premium machine – falls below most companies’ capital application bracket. So we’ve had a lot of customers that would have traditionally fallen into our larger Titan 4 or Titan 6 ranges that are upgrading using cash flow to put the odd machine in here or there – mainly the Hybrid machines – to increase capacity. This approach has been adopted to see sawmills through this quiet period.” The Hybrid range has not been restricted to smaller sawmills and is also been used in larger mills as an alternative resaw line close to the waste. When smaller logs don’t make the grade for the set products in a larger sawmill, they can be diverted to the hybrid resaw, which can cut a smaller product than is typical and is more valuable than chips. Another use is seen in private harvesting operations that feed a sawmill in areas where chip prices are low. The material that does not make the minimum diameter would usually be chipped but in a poor chip market it is more profitable to add a small line for ‘pulp logs’, which will produce a higher value product.
The Titan Hybrid range The Titan Hybrid line consists of the Hybrid Twinband and Hybrid Resaw. The Twinband is described by Multisaw as a “neat log breakdown system for small-to-medium log diameters and lengths”. It uses the company’s
established Titan technology to provide high strain
sawmilling to narrow-band
users. It can be operated with a wide selection of blades, hence the name Hybrid. It has a robust mono frame that allows easy relocation and installation, which is an important feature for infield operations.
Hybrid Twinband key features
Heavy duty TITAN column for high strain sawmilling
Highly accurate electric sizing mechanism
Handles a wide variety of milling conditions and requirements
Optional bolt-on feed extensions for processing of long logs.
The Twinband sits at the input side of the wet- milling process and does the primary breakdown of raw logs consistently and efficiently. “The quality of the primary breakdown affects the recovery of the entire milling process,” Multisaw stated. “It is important to create equal open faces on each side of the log. It is also possible to return the cant back through the Twinband, thereby edging the cant.” The thin kerf and correspondingly low electricity needs add another sweetener during tough economic times.
Meanwhile, the Hybrid Resaw is described as
an “ultra-robust resawing system … ideal for small and large sawmillers looking for a compact resaw that offers similar cutting performance to wideband machines”. It too is based on Titan technology.
Hybrid Resaw key features
Heavy duty TITAN column for high strain, high speed milling
Pneumatically assisted, driven hold down Heavy duty slatt-chain Stationary arbor system on driven wheel
High accuracy linear bearing assisted blade tensioning system.

squares (edged cants). The addition of a simple merry-go-round roller table allows for multiple passes – hence multiple cuts. Alternatively, it is possible to mount multiple heads in a row to resaw entire cants or squares in a single pass. “Regardless of configuration, the thin kerf
and low power consumption of this machine coupled with its unrivalled high performance and high build quality make it our most popular resaw by far,” Multisaw said. The Hybrid range is a manual selection of machines but Multisaw can provide mechanised versions. It can be provided in any formation from a single sawing machine up to the complete sawing line. Luke said the Hybrid’s ability to accommodate varying band widths was crucial for its appeal to a broad range of professionals.
