SHIFTING & SORTING
ProBark is Sawco’s system for log sorting, which comprises the 3D scanner and its optimising software – Sawco
Sawco dates back to 1987 and has vast experience in delivering systems worldwide. Customers are found in Chile, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden, to name a few. Sawco takes on the overall project responsibility like requirement analysis, planning, adaptation to existing systems, commissioning, follow-up and service. An advanced and high precision 3D scanning system forms the base for measuring logs. Three camera units cover the whole periphery of the log and they are pre-calibrated and contain integrated laser and image pre- processing systems. The high powered lasers mean the scanner can see the shape of even the wettest and darkest logs when sorting. The same type of camera unit is used in several of the applications. This means that a broken unit in a production critical-location can be easily replaced with a unit from a less critical position. All system software runs on regular PCs using standard Microsoft components. Adaptations for export of production data to administrative systems are supported. ProBark is Sawco’s system for log sorting, which comprises the 3D scanner and its optimising software. ProLog is able to measure the thickness of the bark to reveal the true shape of the log under the bark. Laser light reflects differently on wood and bark. By using this reflection, it’s possible to establish whether measuring points hit the wood or the
bark on the surface of the log. It’s also possible to determine the bark thickness in transitions between bark and wood. These facts make it possible to see the exact shape of the log under the bark with great accuracy. The ProBark application adds to the functionality of Sawco’s 3D scanner ProScan and is a result of comprehensive research and development. It has been used at log sorting facilities since 2004 and tests have shown up to 91% repeatability when re-sorting unbarked logs using ProBark. Improved log sorting results in less wane and increased yield in the sawmill. The function has been approved by the Swedish Wood Measurement Association (VMF/VMR) after stringent testing and it is also approved for revenue scanning. Today, more than 20 of Sawco’s customers are using ProBark for accurate measurement in sorting using various methods, for example cut pattern, diameter, diagonal, quality sorting etc. A state-of-the art operator’s chair can also be supplied. It’s been developed together with users and ergonomic experts. Ergonomics and flexibility have been the guidelines when constructing Sawco’s operator chair. To prevent work related injuries, such as muscle pain and tiredness, it is vital for a sawmill operator to be able to easily change position when working long hours.
