TOUCHING THE VOID
Having been responsible for their convention centre in Salt Lake City, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints brought Auerbach Glasow French back on board for this follow up project.
With the December 2010 dedication of Brigham Young University-Idaho’s new 15,000-seat auditorium, BYU-Idaho Cen- ter, the campus is now home to one of the largest production theatrical facilities in North America built for the primary purpose of supporting weekly student devotional services. Brigham Young University-Idaho is part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints’ education system, and features lighting design by Auerbach Glasow French having already completed the scheme for its convention centre in Salt Lake City in 2000. The firm worked under the direction of FFKR Architects to design, document and commission the architectural lighting and related controls for the lobby and audito- rium audience chamber within the building. “The biggest difference between both proj- ects is that BYU primarily serves a student community, while the Conference Center is the home of the twice-yearly general conferences and other civic events of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” states Larry French, the principal in-charge for Auerbach Glasow French. “Like many buildings on college campuses, BYU-Idaho Center must serve a variety of uses, there- fore the building is very active throughout the year. In addition to the programmed performances and lectures in the audito- rium, the lobby serves as a pre-event com- munal area, impromptu student study space and as a corridor to an adjacent building.

The finishes in the BYU-Idaho Center, although of a very high quality, are simpler and more exposed than in the Conference Center. The ceiling in the Conference Cen- ter was completely finished and all fixtures were designed to be hidden from sight. At BYU – Idaho the ceiling is simply painted black and the lighting fixtures exposed, giv- ing it a much simpler, more functional look and one more appropriate to a University setting and the use of the building.” The main lobby is a 76,000 square foot volume that is three stories high in the cen- tral zone and features large glass windows at both the north and south ends of the building. The high volumes posed access challenges for maintenance of the lighting. Where possible, catwalks were built into the attic space above the ceilings to access downlights and accent lights. However, this was not an option for all high volume areas, therefore Auerbach Glasow French’s design solution was to attach a faceted mirror system to the ceiling that aims at specific areas on the floor. The lighting fixtures are mounted to the balcony fronts allowing access for maintenance from a standard personnel lift. An added benefit of this design solution is that the ceiling brightness around and on the mirrors aids in reveal- ing the volume of the space. The random pattern of the mirror clusters adds a quiet sense of playfulness to the ceilings. The lobbies are expansive in the north/

The 73,300 square foot auditorium was made to feel more intimate by Auerbach Glasow French’s design concept of breaking up the large surfaces with wall washing and custom vertical sconces.

Grâce au dévouement en décembre 2010 du nou- vel auditorium de 15 0000 places de l’Université Brigham Young-Idaho, le BYU-Idaho Center, le campus abrite désormais l’une des plus grandes in- stallations de représentation théâtrale d’Amérique du Nord, principalement construite dans le but de
soutenir les services bénévoles hebdomadaires des étudiants. Auerbach Glasow French a travaillé sous la direction des Architectes FFKR afin de concevoir, documenter et commander l’éclairage architectural et les contrôles connexes en intérieur pour le hall et la salle de spectacle de l’auditorium. Des solu- tions innovantes ont été proposées pour le hall afin de couvrir un espace extensif de trois étages, ainsi que les longs couloirs courbes. Dans l’auditorium, la firme a conçu pour la salle de spectacle en forme d’éventail un éclairage qui puisse être personnalisé selon les représentations, les services de bénévolat, ou les conférences. Une attention particulière a été accordée aux finitions pour les murs latéraux, et aux autres détails permettant de créer intimité et chaleur. Plafonds encastrés et appliques déco- ratives dispensent une douce lueur, créant ainsi une ambiance intime au sein de l’espace extensif. Des éléments d’éclairage décoratifs contribuent à fournir un degré de relief visuel au sein d’un vol- ume important. A l’extrémité des deux balcons sont disposées des appliques lumineuses qui rythment et éclairent ces longues barrières horizontales.
