What big events has QNCC got lined up already and why was this facility chosen above all others? The Middle East, in its capacity as the largest oil and gas-producing region, will host the world’s most prestigious petroleum event for the first time in 78 years. Qatar will take centre stage as the tri-annual 20th World Petroleum Congress takes place in QNCC. Known as the ‘Olympian event of the oil and gas industry’, QNCC will host more than 4,000 delegates from member countries. QNCC has the capacity and infrastructure to cater to an event of this magnitude and meet the technology demands of a high profile event of this nature under one roof.
Which venues and destinations are your biggest competitors and why? Within the Middle East, the UAE is our biggest competitor due to its mature market in terms of venues, hotel room capacity, connectivity and seasoned meeting and incentive industry. The UAE has (traditionally) ranked as the most popular country in the region to stage events. In recent years, Qatar has made significant
investments in infrastructure and attractions demonstrating the country’s ambition to create a ‘must-visit’ destination for business and leisure tourists. The destination is on the right track and Doha is definitely the place to look out for.
What types of business are you pitching for and from which source markets? QNCC will certainly be the number-one choice for conferences, meetings and banquets from local corporations and organisations within Doha. In addition, we are already in the planning stages for prestigious international events being hosted by the Government in Qatar and by the Qatar Foundation. Qatar Foundation is an independent, private,
non-profit, chartered organisation founded in 1995 by decree of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, to support centres of excellence, which develop people’s abilities through investments in human capital, innovative technology, state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships with elite organisations, thus raising the competency of people and the quality of life. In addition: •With 40,000 square metres of exhibition space – equipped with 30 km of trussing (making it the largest installed rigging system in the world) and 1,800 motorised hoists, QNCC now offers a new solution for regional and international exhibition organisers.
•While many international events are being invited by the Qatari government and the Qatar Foundation, the QNCC team is actively pursuing the lucrative association market, with regional and international clients.

What is the projected impact of QNCC on the contribu- tion the meetings industry makes to the Qatar economy? The average spend of a business tourist is three times more than a leisure tourist. In addition, 25 percent of business tourists return to the destination with friends or family for a holiday within three years of a business visit. Based on reported data, each international conference delegate spends an estimated average of QR1,500 per day in Doha. For example: QR1,500 per delegate x four nights x 1,000 delegates = QR6 million (US$1.64million).
What signs are there that the meetings industry is recovering post-recession? Like the rest of the world, Qatar was affected by the global financial crisis but according to the IMF, Qatar economic growth rebounded 16 percent in 2010 and is projected to accelerate to 20 percent this year. Today, the economic activities are evident with the ongoing construction developments and the number of new hotel projects in the pipeline. QNCC has generated interest from many
corporations and organisers who are keen to bring their events to the country but the centre has also been receiving a steady flow of enquiries from all market segments. IMEX 2011 (The Worldwide Exhibition for
Incentive Travel, Meetings and Events) confirmed that the meetings industry is back on track and this is demonstrated by the presence of corporate buyers from all of the major industry sectors. The latest published reports as revealed at GIBTM earlier this year have also indicated a positive outlook for this industry. On average, 6.2 events were held per organiser last year, with 89 percent expecting to arrange at least the same, if not more events in 2011.
