We all know that the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, but we may now wonder if this applies in a metaphoric as well as a literal sense. From the media coverage of sliding stock exchanges, currencies and prospects for western economies, China seems to be the only beacon of hope. However, tourism-wise the country is

so busy catering for domestic demand that the international visitor is down their list of priorities. Beijing attracted fewer than five million international arrivals in 2009, while domestic visitors numbered a mind-blowing 180 million people (the equivalent of the whole of the UK, France and Italy arriving for their holidays).

Chinese are becoming the main consumers as well as the manufacturers.

They are the third top tourism spenders in the world after Germany and the USA, multiplying expenditure four times since the year 2000 according to the UNWTO. This is a growth that nobody expects to slow. 57 million Chinese travelled the world last year spending US$48 billion

(Chinese Travel Academy). So while the international community is not at the centre of their radar, they should be on ours. The sun really is rising in the East and we need to get out there and make the most of it before midday. By then it will be hot. Way too hot. Read the full report on our trip to China and CIBTM from page 16.
