SUMMER

SIGN-OFFS TO

AUTUMN AIRWAVES

FALL FOR… AND OTHERS THAT HAVE FALLEN FLAT

sales. Then it’s just a matter of hiring the right army of nannies. Oh, the woes of mama Kate. Final episode airs Monday, September 12.

…Awkkkkkkkward! Low-brow? Yes. Well-timed? Definitely. Universally

loved? Eh, not so much. Lopez Tonight (as in comedian George, not pop-starlet Jennifer) saw its final curtain fall quite suddenly last month in favor of Conan O’Brien’s self-titled program. Even though the two late-night funnymen had a clear understanding, it’s still very much a weird and uncomfortable situation—especially with George Lopez, who has never refrained from expressing dissatisfaction. Stay tuned for the latest jabs. The topic of polygamy is pretty edgy even today.

But leave it to HBO to shed the light of perspective on Mormonism with Big Love. During the decent five- season run, the deeply tangled series managed to lure us in by appealing to our morbid curiosity, and then cruelly revealed to us that the series villain was a sadistic psychopath who happened to be gay—Not the most uplifting view of our kind to present to the masses, but hey. It’s not real life, it’s HBO. Just air a gay kiss and some male nudity and the Emmys will come flooding in.

CLIMACTIC CANCELLATIONS …Shoot Yourself in the Foot, Much?

Much?

Okay, networks. There are times when I question your ability to operate soundly. I’m no fiscal expert, but I know a cash cow when I see one. Placing more emphasis on “cash” and less on “cow,” Brothers & Sisters was loved across the board, according to my sources. This is understandable, considering our Soapdish sweetheart Sally Field and timeless heartthrob Rob Lowe were on the credits. And where else could we have turned to see a primary character’s commitment ceremony? (…even if it was preceded by a TV-cliché rollercoaster of a gay relationship). Sadly, May saw the last of the Walker fam- ily. ABC, I hope know what you’re doing. Whatever comes next has some damn stunning shoes to fill.

…That Show Was Still On? Then there are the shows that faded away with but

a somber footnote. Hannah Montana and Jonas L.A. were favorites among teenagers everywhere, and those with hearts equally as young. But much like the fanbase for The Real Housewives of D.C., viewers were already pining for something a little more evolved…not just a rehash of yesterday’s special. And on that note, let’s take a look at what’s ahead.
