A-LISTS theatre by joel martens Boy can I relate to this one: Joseph is the youngest son of Jacob and a “special”

boy with the ability to interpret the future through dreams—he has older brothers who are jealous of his fabulous coat and the attention he receives because of what he sees. This jealousy consumes them all and causes the brothers to commit a rash act the consequences of which are bitterly felt by their parents. Andrew Lloyd Webber must have been channeling my life (I have a rich full-fledged

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLORDREAMCOAT

fantasy going here so be nice) when he came up with this musical adaptation of the biblical story of Joseph. Sheesh, like I said, I can relate—I was the youngest out of four, with just as many years separating me from the next oldest. Everybody said I was soooo cute, very opinionated, could sing and dance and dressed well (an early clue of things to come), there were no rainbow coats, sadly (but if I could have, I certainly would have), my name is Joel (another biblical giant) and I was the apple of my mother’s eye. Oh lordy, did my brothers hate my guts and they all set out to prove it at every turn—they didn’t sell me into slavery, but if they could have . . . wow, I never really thought about the possibility of that (I am imagining the presenting sheepishly a bloody coat to my mother) OMG! And now that I have done my therapy at your expense, I will move on to the play itself. In 1968, in the midst of my personal trials with my broth-

ers (I’m still on that couch), Allen Doggett commissioned the 15-minute piece from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice as a 20-minute “pop cantata” to be performed by Colet Court, his school choir, for their Easter concert. Webber’s father encouraged the two to build on what he felt was a winner and arranged a much-expanded second performance at Westminster Central Hall. Riding on the success of Webber’s show; Jesus Christ Superstar, an expanded and extended version of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat followed in 1969. It was then recorded in 1971 as a 12-track album and issued in the U.S. on Scepter Records, featuring Tim Rice as Pharaoh and Andrew Lloyd Webber on the organ. Then in 1973 it was subsequently performed as a full-scale production in London. It has since then been expanded and performed in many productions throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, and was restaged in 1991 at the London Palladium, revived on Broadway, playing at the Minskoff Theatre in 1993,

then another back in England at Oxford and later Liverpool in 2002. A U.S. national tour began in 2005 and a 2007 revival production was staged at the Adelphi Theatre again in England, where it eventually went on tour (2010) and is still today. Now it’s back in the U.S., in our fair city no less. The San Diego Musical Theatre is

mounting for its first production of their 2011-12 season the MegaMix version of the 7-time Tony nominated musical. Ron Kellum directs the show, Johnny Dean Harvey and Chad Everett Allen share the choreographer’s chair and the featured cast of Joseph will be: Rustin Cole Sailors as Joseph, Bethany Slomka as the Narrator, Josh Adamson as Levi-Pharaoh, Ed Hollingsworth as Jacob/Potiphar, Raul Avina as Issachar/Baker, Johnny Fletcher as Simeon, Reggie Hutchins as Gad/Butler, Luke H.
