their name, but now we honor them by raising money.” He echoes Jacobs point that many services state and nationwide have lost funding and rely on AIDS Walk. “I hope that everyone will come out for AIDS Walk San Diego. Please join a team or walk as an individual—just please come be a part of AIDS Walk San Diego,” Cunningham pleads. Again this year, participation through team ef-

forts is strongly encouraged. “Whether you already have an AIDS Walk & Run San Diego team up and running, or you have been thinking about forming an AIDS Walk & Run team, consider attending one of the Team Leader Workshops and get psyched about the upcoming 5K AIDS Walk and 10K AIDS Run,” said Ian Johnson, the AIDS Walk teams coordinator. Being part of a team is not only a great morale

builder, but it also gives a team’s company, school or organization excellent exposure. It’s a time for fellowship outside the work or school environment, and it’s a great reason for family, friends, and co- workers to get together, according to Johnson, who encourages anyone interested to AIDS Walk & Run San Diego to take the next step to learn more about the exciting way teams help to make the event such a success. “AIDS Walk & Run San Diego Team Leader Work-

shops are a great way to meet and mingle with fellow Team Leaders, learn about online fundraising and group recruitment and share your success stories with your fellow team leaders,” explained Johnson, who also appears in a YouTube clip pro- moting the walk. However, becoming a walker to raise funds, or

donating isn’t the only way to get involved in the fight, a key component not to be looked over, ac- cording to Casey Fields, AIDS Walk & Run San Diego volunteer coordinator. “AIDS Walk couldn’t happen without our dedicated, talented and enthusiastic volunteers,” Fields said. “More than 800 volunteers help make the success of AIDS Walk possible, and we are incredibly grateful for their time and service.” The dedicated crew not only helps to make things

run smoothly the day of the event, but they are in- volved well in advance. Already the AIDS Walk Street Team has hit the streets distributing promotional posters. Additionally, there are opportunities to get involved and raise money while having fun during the Wild Wednesdays phone banks, taking place each week leading up to the big day. With such a variety of opportunities to get

involved and raise funds, AIDS Walk & Run San Diego organizers drive home the point that there’s no reason anyone should not be able to participate. They ask anyone with a Facebook page to promote AIDS Walk by “liking” the AIDS Walk & Run San Diego at facebook.com/aidswalksd.

AIDS WALK & RUN SAN DIEGO

Established as AIDS Walk San Diego in 1989, the event took place for two years prior as the Walk for Life.

Now a program of the San Diego LGBT Community Center, AIDS Walk & Run San Diego is the largest one- day HIV/AIDS fundraiser and the biggest non-governmental financial provider for HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Dozens of agencies—serving thousands of clients—rely on funds raised at the annual AIDS Walk to help provide essential prevention and care programs to thousands of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Through a unique funding partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, AIDS Walk San Diego is able to increase the impact of the dollars raised at the event. Funds from the Walk are combined with donations from other philanthropists and foundations to qualify for matching funds. Since 1989, AIDS Walk San Diego has raised more than $8 million. Last year, in partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, more than $500,000 was distributed to 14 community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations in San Diego County. AIDS Walk & Run San Diego steps off in Balboa Park on Sunday, September 25. Registration opens at 6 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 7 a.m. The 10K AIDS Run starts at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K AIDS Walk at 8:05 a.m. For more information and to register, visit aidswalksd.org or call 619.291.WALK (9255).

can range in size from two to more than 1,000 walkers. Last year, teams were credited with bringing in 70 percent of the event’s total! Reg- ister a team and get a Team Leader Kit complete with all the tools needed to begin organizing a successful team. Teams registering 10 or more participants or raise $1,000 or more by noon on Friday, September 16, receive the highly- coveted yellow shoe placard with your team’s name emblazoned on it. Those teams also get a “Team Meeting Station” on AIDS Walk Sunday. Meeting stations serve as a gathering spot for you to meet up with your team the morning of the event. Teams that qualify and also raise the most money in their division will receive a 10’x10’ team tent for gathering purposes on AIDS Walk Sunday.
