HARVESTER HEADS

measuring wheels can be changed into bigger models to enhance the performance. The multi-stemming function is based on software logistics that automatically control the delimbing blades and feed rollers to collect multiple trees into the harvester head. “It’s very easy to switch

between multi-stemming and single tree handling during the harvesting, and the multi- stemming does not cause any kind of drawbacks in single tree processing whatsoever – there are no extra components or added weight in the head to worry about,” the supplier stated. Stems are counted and an estimation of volume and the number of logs is also recorded. A more precise report of the harvested multi-stemming timber can be achieved by equipping the forwarder with a Ponsse LoadOptimizer loader scale, which measures the weight of loaded and unloaded bundles automatically and gives the load reports in paper printouts and standard format reporting files. Efficient multi-stemming does

however require a larger capacity harvester head and a base

machine of sufficient size if it’s used in normal thinning-size timber because of the added weight of lifting and handling multiple stems. Ponsse’s eight- wheeled harvesters have also been very popular for this reason – they give low surface pressure but excellent balance and traction. The new Ponsse H5 harvester head is a general harvester head especially designed for thinning that pays particular attention to smooth multi-stemming. The large opening, long front delimbing knives and the correctly placed wide top feed roller intensify the

automatic functions for standard delimbing blades and feed rollers – without the need for expensive, heavy and complicated extra equipment such as special multi- stemming arms. This way the amount of service and repair is minimised and, due to the lower weight, the capacity of the crane, can be fully utilised for handling timber. The Ponsse H6 is one step up, while still being a general purpose model for thinning as well as regeneration felling. It has established a good reputation for being very fast and powerful but still light weight, so it is also an excellent choice for multi- stemming. The H6 can be used for multi-stemming with tree diameters up to around 15 cm (6 in). Light weight and proper dimensions make the head easy to manoeuvre with the crane, which becomes particularly important in thinnings where damage to
