Fellow North American company Lucidyne Technologies is a specialist supplier of scanning tecehnology along with related products and has just received word from the American Lumber Standards Committee that its

automated lumber grading system, GradeScan has been certified for lumber strength grading. The multi-sensor scanner is capable of stand- alone strength grading or can be combined with other external sensor technologies. The development work was done in partnership with Weyerhaeuser Company and will first be implemented in two of Weyerhaeuser’s North Carolina facilities to replace existing technologies. This non-contact, non x-ray method will also be made available to other US lumber manufactures later this year. Lucidyne will seek certification in Canada in the near future. Testing in Australia is planned as well. In the meantime, Lucidyne continues to


advance its sensor technologies. Fibre analysis of grain angle and composition has resulted in development of two new technologies. One has resulted in a patent for a method to measure grain angles both in the surface plane and perpendicular to the board’s surface as the fibre moves into the board. A second is expected to provide a significant leap forward in fibre classification, especially with beetle-killed lumber. Already processing lumber at up to 4,000 ft/minute in one mill, Lucidyne’s GradeScan system is now doubling its resolution for two of its sensors. A recent influx of sales has prompted


Lucidyne to increase its production capacity, but the company still intends to maintain its customer-centric attitude to maintain its lead in solving some of the most complex challenges in the lumber industry.
