the grade, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the density. If not used for a final grading, the grading of green wood can be done as a pre- grading process in order to identify and reject low-quality pieces before drying and further processing. “The density of the green sawn timber is a valuable input parameter prior to drying,” Dynalyse said. “With this information, the drying process can be optimised and money saved.”
Grading of sawn or planed timber is usually done on the dry side of the wood process – in sorting mills or planer mills. The Precigrader system from Swedish group, Dynalyse, can be used for grading of dry lumber and green non- frozen sawn timber. The grading of green timber can be done at a cross-conveyor for uniform or mixed sizes in the sawmill. The final grading of timber in the green state relates to the timber grading standards of a specific region.
If the mechanical properties are not in focus, density values should still be of interest. For this, the Densigrader is also available from Dynalyse. The density measurement is based on mechanics, and can be used for speeds usually around 200 pieces/minute. “Both Densigrader and Precigrader are easy to install and simple to use for the operator. There are few moving parts and no active components in the systems. The intelligent designs contribute to the high degree of part availability and low maintenance cost.”
The JoeScan JS-20 Scan Head delivers fast, accurate readings over an easy-to-use Ethernet interface. Easily installed it requires only 24V DC power and an Ethernet connection, avoiding the need for air-conditioned racks of custom
computer and interface electronics. Designed for the most challenging industrial
environments, Joescan heads withstand the extreme vibration of riding on the headrig carriage, whilst the aluminium housing is fully sealed to keep out dust and moisture. The SX provides lineal scanning of boards, cants and small to medium-size logs. It offers an optimal combination of accuracy, scan speed and both field and depth of view, making it an excellent choice for many machine centres. It works well in a ‘lineal edger’ or ‘sharp chain’ setting. The WX is designed for transverse scanning for trimmers and edgers. It exchanges depth of
Fiscal year 2010 marked a year of explosive sales growth for Joescan’s signature line of JS- 20 scan heads with a 260% increase – Joescan
